Ok, ok. I have known and watched Cruiser and his brother since they were knee high to grasshoppers, and I can tell you exactly what he would say:

First, there would be a reference to him being a 4X sectional qualifier. I would debate this, I'd like to see proof that he made weight every year.

There may be a joke about Jason Allen's jacket, or at the very least, a "guy walks into a bar" joke.

Brian Brakeman will be mentioned with reverence at least once.

J. Rarey and his horse Cruiser will be mentioned or alluded to briefly. He may write a story about how the steed is buried under the football field, or he may not...

He will on occasion, although not lately, talk at length about Chuck Norris as if the man were a deity...not much lately, but this was indicative of his 2005-2007 work...

He will mention Tom Ryan and gush like a giddy schoolgirl about his skill and worth as the head coach of Ohio State.

I hope I have helped give you the Cruiser experience without the Cruiser...RIP...

Imade weight every year. Thanks to the fact that I weighed 100 pounds soaking wet my freshman year. And our starting 103 tried making the cut from 135!!! He had 112, even 109...but 103 was WELL passed too much. So, I was next in line.

My sophomore year I did cut weight. I cut from 126 to 112. That was kind of rough, but whatever.

My junior year I started at 138, cut to 125 and then, to fullfil a request of my neighbor, good friend and teammate, I went up to 130 for the post season. He finished 5th in the state. You're welcome Jason Cannon!!!

***Point of note... this year I did qualify for the District tournament. I have no idea what I placed in the sectional but I think it was 3rd. However, I went 0 and 1 (thank you follow your man) at the Toledo District. Ryan Sietz beat me 10 or 11 to 4 and then lost 13 to 10, I think, the next round.

My senior year I ended up at 140 and never saw 150. Not even close to reaching 150 if I recall correctly. This year I lost in OT to a guy who I later coached with. He was pretty good but showed up the 2nd day of districts 9 pounds over. Grrrrreat.

So long wrestling career. And in all honesty, I didn't know what it took. I showed up in November and left in February. I had NO IDEA of the resources available. I had no idea people held open mats, or clinics. Wrestling year 'round!?!?!?! Yeah, okay!

Also, and this is not meant to shift blame at all, but when I look back and think of the three coaches I had over the four years, I think things would have or even could have been different had one of them stayed. You don't get that too often here at the Port. There is always greener grass somewhere. but hey, I can't change any of that. All I can do is try to provide positive opportunities to my kids. Try to turn boys into young men. That's the goal now.

Espescially when it is 100% true. I believe/agree/understand that I was not a very good high school wrestler. There are, I'm sure, 10 different reasons why, but that is how it all went down.

My brother - the real cruiser_94 - was very good in high school. He was in just about every match against the top opponents, even beat some guys that maybe he should not have, based purely on wanting to win. I guess there was that loss against Callucci...that one wasn't so good.

It just wasn't that way for me. With what I know now, I am amazed that I ever won a match. And that goes for technique, positioning, what a coach should be thinking, conditioning, how to relate to an upcoming match, match situations, etc.

Those are the best matches. When one is considered the lesser of the two keeps battling and gets the win.


I'd always rather have the kid with heart over the kid with natural ability......sometimes.
