Pearl said exactly what they were going to try to do, deny Diebler he ball and get OSU in foul trouble. Denying Diebs has been done by Butler, and Minnesota, OSU lost both. Keeping the ball out of Jon's hands isn't tough, he moves poorly without the ball, at least he did last night. Lighty got 2 early, so TN was at least successful in a good part of their game plan. Ohio State could have overcome those things and lets face it nearly did, were it not for getting pounded on the boards, a lack of solid play down low. Madsen and Lauderdale were unlikely to carry this team past a team that was dominant down low like TN.

If Diebler had the same game as Buford you would still be on here talking about how bad Diebler was is what my point is. Yes Buford got his average but what did he do in the 2nd half. nevermind the 2nd half past the first tv timeout. You put this game on Dieblers head when really its much more than that.

Buford averages 14.4 points and got 15. He averages 6 rebounds and got 4. He averages 3 assists and had 3.

Diebler averages 13 points and had 3. He averages 3 rebounds and got 0. He averages 1.5 assists and had 0.

Buford did what he has done all year, Diebler didn't.

OMG you are missing the point here. Im saying if Diebler had the game that Buford had you would still be here saying that Diebler sucks. The way that Buford started he should of had over 20, if you dont see that then I dont know what to tell ya. 9 points (4-5 shooting) in the first 4 minutes, and 6 (1-8 shooting) in the last 36 minutes ya that is acceptable :s.

Another factor here is they were shadowing Jon everywhere on the floor. Now when this happens someone else has to step up and play bigger than their numbers are, because it is tougher for Jon to get his numbers. Them shadowing Jon also makes it easier for other to do this, they are playing 4 on 4 now with Jons defender not helping on him so when they drive his side that guy does not help. Get it now, I tried to break it down for you. hopefully you can understand.

It doesnt matter how well or bad jon plays he is scum to you. Im not defending how bad Jon played last night because he played terrible. Reading the posts that you quoted and your response, where in the fuck do you get the idea that people think Hill and/or Simmons were going to negate what Tennessee did inside? My god, i'm starting to think you really are that fucking stupid. From what i've read and gathered in this thread, nobody is saying that putting Simmons in would have stopped Tennessee inside, that's just ridiculous. I think what they're saying is that the skinny and short Simmons (not Hill...I haven't seen him mentioned here) might have made one or two of those three-pointers Diebler was missing. In a three-point loss, one extra three-pointer just might have made a difference. And, well, I doubt Simmons' presence on the floor would have made their inside power game any more potent. It's not like Diebler or anyone else on the floor was doing much to stop it.

Ohio State had a nice year but didn't play particularly well in key defensive situations against Tennessee. I can make 2 footers or less. Tennessee was getting cheap baskets the entire fourth quarter. At least it certainly looked like that to me.

As to the worse defense when Simmons was in for Lighty, that's a good point as far as that goes. I really noticed that last night. But I wasn't surprised. Defense is the cornerstone of Lighty's game, while Simmons is worthless if he's not hitting shots.

The big thing people are mentioning here, though, is that Diebler wasn't bringing it PERIOD. One shot made, one steal. No rebounds, no assists. Multiple people have mentioned that he wasn't doing much of anything on defense. By giving Simmons a few minutes in the second half, Matta would be replacing an ice cold gunner with a smaller gunner who had hit either 3/4 or 3/5 of his three-point attempts.

Simmons won't give you anything but offense on the days he's hitting his shots. Last night, Diebler was like that...but without the offense. This was a close game where every possession counted. To me, it simply makes sense to give a hot shooter some time when the team's top pure shooter is completely ineffective.

Would this have been a "sure" solution? Heck no! But could it possibly be worth a shot. Heck yes! Regardless of the situation, 6 guys didn't get the job done. Reading the posts that you quoted and your response, where in the fuck do you get the idea that people think Hill and/or Simmons were going to negate what Tennessee did inside? My god, i'm starting to think you really are that fucking stupid. From what i've read and gathered in this thread, nobody is saying that putting Simmons in would have stopped Tennessee inside, that's just ridiculous. However, like you stated, despite all of Tennessee's advantages inside, they only won by 3. Is it not possible that having put Simmons in the outcome would have been different? Another LIE, show us where I said "Matta is always right". NEVER have, the only implication I've made concerning Matta is that without a doubt he is a far better coach than any wannabee coach on here.

Read and learn. Below I pointed out why Simmons made the baskets he did when in for Lighty, but not would not have had the same looks if he was substituted for Diebler. My problem with Diebler was that he took the shots that he did, they weren't good looks, he wasn't open. When not open don't force shots, run through the progressions again.

OSU was outscored in the paint by 28.

1. The reason we lost last night is because Tennessee got whatever they wanted in the paint and Ohio State got nothing in the paint. Diebler has very little to do with that (though it would be nice if he could dribble drive and either finish or find an open guy, but he can't).

2. Ohio State doesn't have the personnel on this team to championship level basketball inside.

3. Matta still should have tried putting Simmons in at least for a little while in the second half. Tennessee was not going to leave Diebler no matter what, and Diebler has never in his life hit a shot with a guy in his face. There was no way Diebler being the player he is, facing Tennessee's game plan against him, could have been successful yesterday.

Anyone who knows anything about basketball also knows that this stat line (1-8 from field, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 2 fouls, 3 points) shouldn't compute to 40 minutes of play. As you said, post defense was the primary problem that led to the loss, but getting next-to-no production from a key player couldn't have been beneficial to the team. If getting subbed out for a few minutes while he's not performing is traumatic enough to him that it would ruin him for the rest of the national tournament, dude doesn't have the fortitude to play high-level basketball. Or does every pure, spot-up shooter in college basketball play the entire game regardless of how they're performing? At some point, doesn't a coach have to look for what's best for his team at the moment instead of riding the "he's going to find his range...ANY TIME NOW!" ship straight to the bottom of the ocean?

Lol you're acting like this is the only stat line relevant to the topic. Did you happen to glance at his stat lines from the last two games? No? Because everyone knew he scored 20+ and was happy. Guess what? His stat line NEVER looks like most players who play 40 minutes. He averages like a half a rebound per game for the year. Did he play bad? Sure he did. Was it any different than any other game he's played bad? No it was not. Matta never pulled him earlier in the year, so I have no idea why the 50+ apparent DI college coaches on this thread thought he would in the 38th game of the season.

BTW, there's an expression in basketball: "Keep shooting!". It's what you tell a guy who's SOLE JOB is to shoot, and he's not making his shots. You work through it and keep shooting.

I have two responses: When you only have 6 guys that are legit (sorry, but I went to BG, who's horrible in men's basketball, and Madsen would struggle to play THERE let alone anywhere else, so he's not legit) and the guy who's struggling is one of your top 3 scorers, yes you keep him in the game. Do you think that next weekend if Scheyer comes out and looks horrible in the first half that K is going to pull him out of the game? If you do, then you're insane. Sorry, but you don't just abandon your players at the first sign of them struggling. I've watched several games this year where Deibler look pedestrian in the first half, only to catch fire in the last 10 minutes. All Matta needed from him was a basket or two, because we were in the game all the way until the very end, and his thinking was the same as everyone elses; he's a streak shooter who can miss 10 in a row, and then hit 3 or 4 in a row. That's Deibler in nutshell right there. He just never got hot, or hot enough to give us the basket or two Matta hoped he would down the stretch. Who knows, if the game lasts another 3 minutes, Deibler might hit two 3's and be the hero. You can never tell with him. Matta went with the odds that he was way below his average of PPG, so he was due to hit sometime soon, he just ran out of time before he did.

So Diebler had an off game? Big figgen deal. I assume Dynasty, as he claimed to play college ball...played GREAT every game? Guess what, its a game, similar to golf, that NO ONE can perfect.

How about talking about Dieblier prior 6/7 games? He was huge in the Big Ten, as well as the first 2 NCAA games.
