Syracuse lost in their quarterfinals. Are they removed from #1 contention? Tons of teams, including Kansas, Kentucky, West Virginia and Purdue have struggled with inferior opponents today or yesterday. Are they also removed?

Maybe we should give Ohio University a #1 if they beat Akron tomorrow. My Bobcats don't have a single impressive win, but they have beaten #1 seed Kent State and #4 Miami by double digits in back-to-back games. Since impressive wins count for so much, the fact they've been smacking down opponents should put them at the top of the NCAA!

Article in the Dispatch, today, quotes Matta as saying he was yelling at one of the referrees (Hughes) because a lot of his calls during the game had infuriated Matta. I'm having trouble opening the Dispatch right now or I would quote it. There are either 3 or 4 articles about yesterday's game. This information is in about the 4th paragraph from the bottom of the article. If I can get the Dispatch to open for me I'll edit this and post the link.

"Matta, after leaping into a crouch on the court and pumping his fist in celebration, strode toward midcourt shouting in the direction of official John Hughes, whose calls in the second half had sometimes infuriated Matta.

"Just letting him know it was good," Matta said later.

Another official, Ed Hightower, intercepted Matta and redirected him back to his bench while the officials reviewed a replay to determine whether the shot indeed was good. It showed that the ball left Turner's hand with two-tenths of a second on the clock."

From a Michigan fan forum...

Ok Michigan fans, I want you to know that I'm a Virginia Tech fan born and raised in Richmond, VA, and I joined this message board for the sole purpose of telling you a lovely story about Thad Matta.

Back before Coach Beilein was at WVU, he coached the University of Richmond. Matta, at the time, was at Xavier. Both play in the A-10. One conference game in Richmond between the Spiders and Xavier turned ugly at the end, when Xavier came back from a large deficit to win near at the end. Star player David West (N.O. Hornets) immediately leaned over the railing restraining the student section to taunt and talk. He was pulled back before the students could get to him.

Both teams exit through the same tunnel to get to their locker rooms. According to a friend of mine who was the team manager at the time, and who was standing in the tunnel as it happened, Xavier players instigated a brawl with Richmond players. While Coach Beilein was in the middle of it, attempting to break things up, Matta was leaning against the wall, laughing at the scuffle, soaking up his glory.

When Coach Beilein noticed this, he quickly approached Matta, put a finger in his face and yelled for him to take his classless bunch of thugs and get the hell out of Richmond. Of course, you can imagine that the words Coach Beilein used are not appropriate to be printed in this forum.

Anyways, I assure you, though I am only a transplant Michigan basketball fan thanks to my favorite coach in America, I hate Thad Matta just as much as all of you, and I have for about 10 years now.

You stay classy, Ohio State.

Either this particular poster has a very creative imagination, or he might have something. I truly do think Matta was yelling at someone on the UM bench. Perhaps we'll never know for sure...

Exactly what I thought. Though it wasn't exactly the scorers table, it was a official.

FWIW, I just heard a rumor from someone who talked to someone inside OSU. (I know, I know...) Apparently Beilein was the coach who didn't vote for Turner for Big10 POY. After he made the shot, Matta yelled "How do you like the fucking big ten player of the year?"

If it's true, I'm not sure how much it was embellished by the time it got to me.

Not saying there is any truth to it, but I questioned it as a possibility, I could see there being a bit of a bad taste for Beilein following such a dis were it to actually be the case.

The majority of speculation surrounds Crean and Izzo as the potential dissenter.
