Last year Rittman lost to Sandy Valley by 12, to Northwestern by 21, and to Waynedale by 20 in games 3, 4, and 5 respectively. No matter how many people those teams lost to graduation, I wouldn't consider anything "easy".

I guess scheduling the three games you have some discretion over can be looked at one if two ways. You can schedule three cupcake teams to build your team's confidence or you can mix in one or two teams which are tough year in and year out which makes your team more prepared for league play.

I am not one hundred percent convinced either theory is right I guess I see merits to both schools of thought.

I do believe Rittman is much improved this season and look forward to them continuing in the right direction

good point ringz - I do think in a situation like rittman's where wins have been so hard to come by recently, that victories and confidence are as important as anything these kids need to know they can win some football games. It may not prepare you for league play, but you need w's at this point. When you start consistently winning 5 plus games, then beef up the noncon. schedule.

I'm with you 1486. You've got to start somewhere, if anything, to get some NUMBERS in that program, something which has been serverely lacking. I hope Rittman can build on last season and continue to improve as a program. Good luck to all WCAL schools in their non-conference schedules (except for maybe Waynedale in one of their games).

I was just over on another sports message board and learned the following about Conotton Valley football.

Last month CV hired their new football coach a coach with two years experience and the fourth head coach this senior class has been coached by. There was no teaching position open for the new coach so he is teaching elsewhere. And if that wasn't bad enough their three year starting QB (who everyone says is pretty good) transferred to Malvern this summer.

Wow. That sounds like a sad situation for the kids who really want to play football.

As far as strength of schedule is concerned who has the toughest non league in the WCAL? I have to go with Smithville then Northwestern running a close 2nd. Any thoughts?

The bit I saw of the Rittman-Kenmore 7 on 7 Rittman dominated. They were finding narrow lanes to throw the ball and the recievers were coming up with big plays. As far as defense, Kenmore really couldn't get much going so the defense was stiingy. Again I only saw a bit but the Indians looked impressive. And dhs, I will get pictures of the unis as soon as they get them.... I can't respond to the private message because I have yet to reach 15 posts :P

As far as Rittman goes, I wouldn't quite chalk up a 3-0 start just yet. 7 on 7's don't really translate into regular season 11 on 11 play. (look at Northwestern last year, murdered in 7on7 play, resulted in being picked last in WCAL) While CV & Brookside are downtrodden programs, Sandy Valley was 5-5 last year and should be a stiff test for the tribe. No matter what happens out of conference, Rittmans biggest goal should be to win a WCAL contest. Until that happens the tribe can't be anything but a cellar dweller.

Good news is they have some talent and a good coach....anything can happen, but I think 2 to 4 victories in 2010 would be realistic forward progress.

Not to upset the Bulldog, Husky, G-Bear or Bobcat faithful, but the team that could be scary good this year is Smithville. Finished strong last year, tough schedule again with a more seasoned crew.

don't necessarily disagree about smithville - its just hard to know with them. They have some talent and speed. I saw them in one game last year and they looked awful to put it nicely. Of course that's one game and by all accounts they improved a lot as the year went on. The WCL will be as open as any year in recent memory IMO and probably very hard to predict this fall. As I have said before, I think dalton and northwestern have the best shots at winning the league, but both are anything but locks and have questions. I think everyone outside of rittman and chippewa has a shot at challenging (and rittman should be much better).

My early guesses are Northwestern, Norwayne, Rittman, Smithville should all be better than last year. Dalton, Chippewa will likely be about the same.
Hillsdale and Waynedale probably not quite as good.

7 on 7's exploit a defense and inflate a offense's expectations. And as much as I hate to agree with you Red-I think you are spot on with the Smithie prediction.

Just heard that they Cats got Indorf back on staff for this season. If so, that is a great move by their head coach. I mentioned way back when the Cats were hiring for the head coaching job that he would be a great fit.....saw him play at Dalton and he won, then he went to Mount Union and won, and now he has been at the College of Wooster on their staff and won. I hope my Bulldogs have a smooth transition in the coaching ranks and keep the tradition that former players, like Indorf, set in place alive.

Sounds like Northwestern is going to be without their starting QB for the beginning of the season. Not really the news this Huskie fan wanted to hear, but like last year, I think the Huskies will go only as far as their small, quick & opportunistic defense can carry them.

About the SMV-MOG rumor, we've waited long enough RINGZ.......Do Tell, I'm dying to hear it.
