I usually grow mine to the bottom of the ear. In high school, they were down almost to my chin when I wasn't playing a sport. When I was playing basketball or baseball, they had to be middle of the ear. They get shaggy quick.

I don't have long sideburns or anything, but I have them down to about the center of my ear, the straight across cut is awful. It just looks awkward.
