Purdue as a #2 or a #3 seed in their bracket?? That would be a huge break , IMO.
I think it is a break, but it is a much bigger for the other 2 or 3 seed in that particular bracket matched up with Purdue. Hummel is really able to help Purdue overcome two major deficiencies, lack of inside depth and lack of reliable outside shooters. Purdue has two guards that just flat-out cannot shoot the basketball well (Chris Kramer and Lewis Jackson). Without Hummel out there to help stretch the floor with Moore and Grant, the lane becomes pretty clogged up inside. Hummel's solid rebounding (6.9 a game) and occasional inside scoring helped off-set the fact that JaJuan Johnson isn't real physical inside and their only interior back-up is an inconsistent, inexperienced Freshman (Bade). And that kid just doesn't have near the talent of Robbie Hummel.
Obviously, it's always beneficial to the #1 seed if there are less teams in their bracket that can potentially make the Final Four. And even though I had them as a near-lock to make it to Indy before the injury, w/o Hummel I don't think they have much of a chance. But the other #2 or #3 seed will face a much weaker Purdue squad or a much lower seeded team if the Boilers get knocked out earlier. A team like West Virginia, Villanova, Kansas State, etc. could have a pretty easy path to the Elite Eight. Whoever that team is will benefit the most from Hummel's terrible injury, not the #1 seed. The Buckeyes obviously don't have a chance of gaining that advantage.
