Sorry if there's already a thread on this; I couldn't find one.

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Concepcion, Chile last night. Over a dozen aftershocks followed, measuring as high as 6.9. There doesn't seem to be nearly the amount of devastation as Haiti, but it's bad nonetheless. There's also tsunami warnings out all down the South American coast, in Australia, and in Hawaii.

Even the West Coast and Alaska are in danger of a Tsunami. 8.8 is a HUGE earthquake.

No disrespect to the dead but I guess it's time for the US citizens to get out their checkbooks to take care of another random country that had an earthquake.

I am planning on giving the same amount for this disaster relief effort as I did to the Haitian one.

I seen where Hawaii has been put on high alert for a tsunami, with the first waves expected to impact in about 10 minutes.

I'll donate my money to Maui if it is destroyed because I'd like to visit there. Unfortunately for Haiti and Chile, I have no desire to visit.

Let me ammend my earlier post. I am sure I did indirectly contribute to the Haitian relief effort. At least a couple of my tax dollars went to the cause either as part of the US donation, or to help fund our soliders who are there ona welfare mission.

Oh, and I did give my kid $1 to donate to the school cause. For his donation he was able to wear a hat during class one Friday.

So I have helped the great people of Haiti out in their time of need. And I feel fucking wonderful about myself because of it.

I think it is going to hit Hawaii 11:20 their local time, not EST.

Does Chile even have anyone there?
No but it is 'chile' there.

I know, super corny.

I bet there are beans scattered everywhere.

But on a serious, not overwhelmingly corny note, that is a massive earthquake. Death toll up to 122.

That sounds like a windy day and Myrtle beach?
The height of the wave may not be what is disasterous, the force and how far in land is what will be destructive. Hopefully it isn't as bad as we expect.

Expecting 8' waves. Doesnt sound like much, but to low lying areas this would flood them out.

I would stick to the high ground. We can't get the weather right. I would hate to near the coast and find out the prediction was off by 10' or so.

Attention: Tsunamis have nothing to do with the height of a wave; they have everything to do with the speed. Tsunamis are tsunamis because they are usually 500+ mph or faster in the open water, slowing to 50 or so when making landfall.

The tsunamis in Indonesia were no taller than 5-10 feet, some were as small as 3 feet.

There have been destructive tsunamis that have been no more than 6-10 inches high.
