Hard fought battle between 2 tough teams. Hats off to the Birds who get it done on the road. Vanhorn was lights out shooting today and Utica turned the ball over way too many times for this match up. Looks like Loudenville is in the drivers seat at this point and Utica gets another shot at them later in the season but it's in the birdcage next. The redskins need this as a wake up call, time to get back to work there is a lot of basketball to be played.

Absolutely. Great win for Loudonville's program, and all the credit goes to them. They played very well on the road, and made all the key baskets and plays, while Utica made some, they missed opportunities as well, which is a tribute to Loudonville's gameplan. Utica's turnovers and lack of any discernable inside game proved too costly to overcome. If we are to have a chance to give the Birds a game at their place next month, we must improve our passing and ability to get points in the paint. I was also slightly disappointed to see very little, if any press from Utica late in the game when they needed to get some turnovers. Utica has a tall task in front of them trying to even it up having to win @ Loudonville in the second game; but all you can do is watch the film, learn and get better, and focus on getting back on track this week with our next opponent. We'll be there to support the Skins as they improve and get our young girls some experience. Congrats to Loudonville on an excellent game and a big win today. The better team as of 12/12 is Loudonville, we will see how coach Snow and the girls are able to regroup and learn from this. It could be a positive or a negative, but with our senior leadership and coaching, I have confidence (as 4theteam said) that this will serve as a wake-up call and we will move forward positively. Great game to watch, as I'm sure the second game will be as well!

Today was Loudonville's first win at Utica, and our record at Loudonville is less than stellar as well. It will be tough. We need to find someone who can guard Vanhorn...she is a really fantastic player for a sophmore. You can't "contain" one player (Orchard) just to let another girl go off or basically 30 points and expect to win. I'd say we learn a lot from this, experiencing first hand how balanced Loudonville is, and we will see a vastly different gameplan next month when they meet again.

Yeah that is the same thing that Waynedale found out the other night also. ran a triangle and 2 against Orchard and Scarberry but just let Vanhorn and Ryan just go off. Redbirds are going to be tough for teams to guard this season.

Just an FYI Saturday's Loudonville vs Johnstown(12/19) game origanally scheduled for L-ville has been switched to J-town. Meaning the game scheduled for 2/4 will be played in L-ville.

Any Freddie fans on this thread? Utica plays Fredricktown this Thursday and I see there overall record is 3-1. Wondering what the Freddies look like this season. Do they have any experience returning? Who have they played so far? I had read some time ago about a big inside Freshman that they expected to go to alot, any word on this player?

Redbirds beat East Knox 72-34 tonight. Birds put 5 in double figures. two with double-doubles. Orchard 17-10 points and Rebounds. and Ryan 14-10 points and rebounds. Also in double figures were Vanhorn 11, Scarberry 12, and Baker 12.

East Knox was lead by Hayley Gray with 9.

Utica over Fredricktown tonight. Not a pretty game at times and Fredricktown did a nice job of slowing the pace on this game which really threw Utica out of sorts but the Redskins adjusted and fought hard to pull out the victory. Utica improves to 5-1 overall.

I'm pretty sure that game tonight will take the cake for ugliest game of the year in the MBC, and possibly the worst-officated game (at least to date). And it went both ways. Credit Fredericktown for screwing up our rhythm, but our girls for responding. For the first half we had, we easily could have been out of the game. I still for the life of me can't understand why we don't see any press!! It drives me insane...isn't this what Snow's defense has been built around in defensive games like this? We should have had 20+ turnovers tonight. Fredericktown has a few solid shooting guards, but no one near good enough to bring the ball up if we would have put on a full court, even for part of the game. Also, nice to see Wolfe and Overton step up and make a few key plays down the stretch, when some of the starters were struggling shooting. We need to get a LOT better before we see Loudonville again, or Granville in January/Newark Catholic in February. Still lots of work to be done, but a W is a W, and on the road, we'll take them any way we can.

R_S_P do you think that snow may be unsure of pressing with some of youth she has on her team? I know if you are not as deep as in years past that high tempo and pressure style of game will kill your legs and possible foul trouble. Just an observation after watching Utica play L-ville.

Yes and no Rbirdsman. Yes because there are a lot of young girls seeing time this year, and it's true we aren't all that deep; but also no, because we've never been that deep. The team two years ago that played Newark Catholic for a district title basically went 7 deep, and after that if anyone saw time, it was JV players. So it's not like this is the first year we've been lacking a little bit in depth, but it seems this year we've really backed off going to the press. And I understand the use/lack of use from a fatigue standpoint; however, coach Snow has always used it in the past just for a small part of games, to get the game under control, get a nice lead, and then we go back to our man or man/zone combos. She obviously knows what she's doing a lot better than I, or any other fans, and that's what matters. It's just frustrating to watch Fredericktown, who is also young, stay in the game with us because we kept playing their style of ball (mostly halfcourt sets), instead of forcing a tempo on them that they couldn't handle.

Fredericktown's a pretty talented team for as young as they are, and I'm telling you about next year they're going to make some noise in the MBC. But that game last night, there is no way they could have handled our seniors pressing them. They didn't have any guards capable of breaking a well-executed press that I saw; and that's not a cut on them, it's just that they don't play that style of ball. We do, and we always have since Snow has been there. I'm hoping to see more of it as our younger players gain experience, because I think we're going to need it at some point in the near future. I've seen it save our butt more than a few times over the last 5-6 seasons when we weren't shooting very well, to create easy transition buckets and get us a lead or help us come from behind. Again, I definately don't like saying anything bad about a win; but it's just something I've noticed a lot this season, and I'm wondering where it went, because if I've seen us press at all, it was in the very first game against Heath, but I don't recall us doing it then either.

Redskins take down the Trojans today 62-38. Utica finally looks to have shaken off the Loudonville hangover, getting a solid game from Corbett, Davis, Wolfe, and Londot in points, and a great rebounding day from Lugar. I hope her improvement on the glass the past few games continues. We need this team to be a TEAM. We can't have weaknesses for good teams to exploit repeatedly, and if we can get a commanding rebounding presence in the paint, it takes away one of those weaknesses. This game was a great way to head into the break of a few weeks, and good motivation for us to keep getting better. Corbett had to have at least 30 today, and Wolfe was doing some nice work in the paint.

Red_Skin_Pride now I will tell you the J-town/L-ville game is now the ugliest game in the MBC this seaon. The Redbirds managed to squeak out a win 38-35 on the road. Sloppy play all around. But J-town has always been a tough place for the Redbirds to play.

Adding to RSP on Utica, very nice to see the lady redskins get back on track and play their game. I did expect to see Centerburg pose a larger threat today but Utica was hitting their shots and playing some excellent team basketball and great defense. Very, very excited to see Lugar perform in the paint today, now we just need her to produce some points. We really need her to get better on the back part of the season! There are some very tough games coming in January. In other news...I was floored to see that Johnstown almost knocked of the Redbirds, not sure what that was all about??:huh:

Wow, shocked to see that score. Johnstown is getting better, quite rapidly I might add. They knocked off a Northridge team earlier this week that I fully expected to finish in the top 3-4 of the conference, and it sounds like they stayed close to the top team in the conference right now in a sloppy game. They are always tough; I don't care for their coach's personality too much, but she always prepares them well and has them ready to compete. I'm sure you guys were relieved to get the W on the road, as we were thursday at Fredericktown. But this speaks to the fact that I think the conference is better this year than it was last year, and that's great for all the teams. It'll only help come tourney time.

Yes. If we can get Lugar to consistently rebound like she did today, and give us even 10 ppg, it'll add a whole new dimension to our offense. Having Londot and her to handle in the paint would be tremendously beneficial to us against good teams. She doesn't have to dominate, she just needs to be enough of a factor that teams have to worry about her, and enough of a factor that she can make them pay if they don't. We could be a GREAT team by season's end, but we must keep our head down and keep working on several factors, including our rebounding and inside scoring. Our perimeter (and Wolfe as a Wing/Forward player) is good enough to keep us in almost any game, but what will determine how we do against Loudonville, Granville, Newark Catholic, etc is if we can compliment that with formidable inside play. If we could show some semblance of being two dimensional (something slightly lacking in Snow's tenure) there's no telling how far this team could improve by the time the tournament rolls around. If we continue to hit our shots, and can get points in the paint consistently from Londot, Lugar, and sometimes Wolfe, we could pose a serious threat to Loudonville. If we don't keep improving, unfortunately I think we may fall just short again in round 2. However, as you said 6-1 is a great spot to be in at the break, and we'll see how the Redskins mature by next year . Already ready for January 7th!!

Yea Loudonville never plays well when they go to Johnstown. I don't know if it is the gym or the bus ride or today the fact it was supposed to be a home game. (double booked our gym with a wrestling meet.) but I'll take a win. sloppy or not. But I do have to give J-town credit. They gave up 14 to orchard in the 1st quarter then changed the there defense and only let her score 4 more the rest of the game.

Bad reffing at L'ville Jtown game. Orchard and Scarberry both got JUMPED! And both are hurt.
Our girls had to dress in a classroom....I think we should return the favor.
