They suck. My little brother does this all the time but it's more comical than annoying because we get to make fun of him. I do know some who are quite obnoxious about it, though.

How do you handle a one upper?

I let them have their glory. It's must be pretty important to them to think they have bettered me. It's flattering.

I make up stuff and see if they try to one up with made-up knowledge. Makes for great entertainment.

Depends on who it is and how often it happens. If they are one to do it ALL the time...I'll call them out on it.

Well I have five brothers and a sister! (That is actually true but luckily only one does this, lol).

I know a few and they drive me nuts! Usually goes in one ear and out the other! If I am really annoyed I will interrupt them mid story and completely change the subject/story.

My girlfriend's twin brother is a big time one upper...He's done everything you have...but more extreme...I always look at her younger brother and laugh because we both know he does it bad.

Have you guys ever seen that commercial with the one uppers? I can't think of what it's for, but there's this one "one-upper" who is like "Oh you think this is good salsa? Well obviously you've never been to Guam."...I laugh every time because it reminds me of her brother.

I am also not a fan, however this topic is reminding me of the reoccuring character on SNL played by the skinny chick with no chin (Target Lady). It is so stupid, yet I laugh every time.

There used to be a guy that I worked that was a notorious one upper. He would invite himself to lunch with us about once a month and we would always see who could come up with the most outlandish story that he was going to one up. It got to the point where the first one to laugh had to buy the rest of us (excluding the one upper) lunch.
