Just watched it last night. Disgusting movie. Anyone else see it? I don't mind gruesome stuff, but I don't understand the need for the rape scene. It's disgusting.

also saw the remake a couple of nights ago....I agree with you, very very hard to watch.
After putting the viewer through that violation scene, you had to stick around to see the bad-dudes get slaughtered, though.

OK so when the movie first came out in the early '70's it was supposed to be a more graphic depiction of a true life crime. The purpose of the movie was to shock people that this kind of stuff could and did happen. Much like "In Cold Blood" did a decade or so earlier.

The whole purpose of the original movie was to shock audiences. In some areas the movie was rated X, or theatres simply refused to show it.

The movie (original) has a very historic place in movie history.

The rape scene was included to show just how brutal and vicious the real life attacks were.

That's pretty sad. I wanted to vomit watching the movie. I've seen movies with rape scenes, but this is by far the worst I've ever seen. Probably because it lasted so long.

There isn't much that affects me when it comes to movies. The you are talking about, for some reason, was really difficult to stomach. And the movie wasn't so good otherwise, though I always thought the first one sucked too.

I watched it for a while but decided that it wasn't going to get any better and the violence was way too much for me.

Yeah. With the original, you could tell that what they were portraying even had an affect on the powers that be who worked on the film.

At least, that's the only logical explanation I can come up with for the utterly moronic "comic relief" scenes involving the Dukes of Hazzard-esque cops attempting to figure out what's what. "How should we set up this rape/murder? I know...let's have a scene where everyone can laugh at these stupid cops!"

I think that the difference in the two films (I haven't seen the earlier, just basing in on the time it was made) would have to be that in those days, people found it grotesque, and these days, there are probably more people who get off on that. Very disturbing.

I haven't watched the original or the remake.

Mainly because slice and dice movies are no thrill to me at all. After the first 1,000x that you see people in a movie ending up like they've been through a salad shooter, it kinda just gets blase after awhile.
Secondly, as people have pointed out - the rape scene. I have no desire to see anything like that.
I mean, we've all seen various movies that have certain levels of rape scenes already. But, in reality, those scenes are kind of vanilla and romanticized by Hollywood for the sake of ratings, financial backings, potential viewers, potential awards, etc. I don't want THAT much reality in a movie that I want to see to enjoy myself for a few hours.

That really isn't a movie you can sit back and relax for a couple of hours even without the rape scene.

This is a movie you need to watch the original, don't base your concerns on the remake, they took it way too far IMO.

Exactly, I think the original one is more frightful. Probably because you use your imagination more in that one. Add that to the seemingly low budget photography, and the whole thing comes off as creepy.

I agree the rape scene was pretty bad. I think there are worse (i.e. the rape scene in The Hills Have Eyes 2)
That scene was disgusting and unbearable.

Yeah, the rape scene in "The Hills have Eyes 2" was terrible, just like the movie..

The on in this movie was terrible as well, but at least the ending made up for it.. Pretty cool to see the dudes head explode in the microwave.

The Original creeped me out more than the remake.

The rape seen was grusome but that happens almost all the time, which is sad.

I liked the movie. I agree that it was disturbing to watch but I think that that set it apart a bit from other films.
