I think more of what I was getting at is Syracuse beats people because they can stifle them on defense and get teams totally out of sync. However, I think they have 3 weaknesses.
1. They can be turned over. Suspect ball-handling, despite many players who can handle.
2. Teams can make shots. If a team is just hitting, which will undoubtedly happen sometimes, it will be a close game.
3. The above statement on Johnson.
Maybe all we can take out of this is that it's a pre-cursor as to why match-ups are SO IMPORTANT come NCAA time. Look at Louisville, an average team, but they can press you and get turnovers and they shoot a ton of 3's. It those things go their way like they did today, the Cuse can be beaten, and we saw that.
Of course if a team is hot shooting the ball then that zone makes Syracuse very vulnerable. That's how Pitt beat them back on Jan. 2. I would say a big weakness is foul trouble. You'd think that playing a zone that wouldn't be such an issue but if Rautins or one of the "big's" (Onuaku and Jackson) get in early foul trouble......the Orange will be in trouble. I've seen it happen several times this season although Syracuse has been good enough to overcome most of the time. But against a good/very good team.....if Rautins is picking up cheap fouls or Jackson/Onuaku have to hit the bench early because of fouls.....I see the Orange losing.
Today's loss wasn't good, but if it serves as a wake up call......it could be a blessing in disguise. We'll see. I think the Orange lost a little bit of their edge recently. Maybe all of the pats on the back and press clippings went to their head a bit. They just need to get back to playing balls to the wall.
