That's basically how I thought it was under Weis. You will never be able to convince me he was not good enough with the offense (although I wish they'd have been able to run a bit more). The defense was just so bad it was laughable.
cc go fuck yourself. Good offense + bad defense = mediocre season.
And therein lies one of the big problems that Weis had while at ND.....it's NOT the pros so that "business-like" approach doesn't fucking work. And calling the game that way works in the NFL but not in college.

Weis's general lack of attention to the defense (and special teams) is essentially why he isn't on the sidelines this year. Sure there were times where the playcalling had us all scratching our heads, but what team or coach doesn't have moments like that? It's definitely hard to argue the stats and numbers that ND's offense put up in the Weis era - they have pretty much rewritten ND's record books on the offensive side. Opening up the playbook pretty much consisted of throwing deep balls on every down to Floyd and Tate - while it definitely worked a lot of times, it's crazy to call that practical playcalling.
Charlie Weis just was not a complete football coach, or head coach, and probably never will be. It was without a doubt, a miserably failed experiment. Although we have all disagreed on his playcalling, I think we can all say ND is in a much better place by not having Weis on the sidelines this year.
Nobody was saying "chuck it deep on every play." That's silly. But the same fucking screen to Hughes or Allen or the frequent stretch handoff to Hughes or continuing to run up the middle on 3rd and 4th & 1 when your team has shown you that they're probably not going to convert and the D fucking knows it's coming anyways (just to name a few) were nauseating. "Ya' are what ya' are." I believe Weis said that when he got hired. Well, his team/personnel was not smash mouth running team and that dink-and-dunk shit did nothing but dig ND a hole and then when he decided to open it up....they actually scored quite a bit. But it was usually too late by then.

It's easy to simply blame the defense for everything. Well they were, without a doubt, the weakest link on the team.......we knew the defense wasn't going to be good and the offense was going to have to carry the team. Might as well take your chances in shoot outs. There were times that the D made some big stops and the offense went out their and shit down their leg behind piss poor playcalling. Sure, execution was to blame at times and there's enough blame to go around but I think it's a shame that Weis' playcalling tends to get a free pass. After the first two seasons....it went downhill-big time.
We've all argued this countless times before and there are people on both sides of the fence on this one. We can agree to disagree.
