The unnatural direction thing is just something that tends to happen from time to time. You've just gotta take those in stride and deal with them.

When you try to discuss things diplomatically and ask questions to understand, most officials wont have a problem. When a guy can tell me what he saw and why he called it that way, I can pretty much deal with it, because there's probably something my kid did along the line during the play to put the call in his hands, in which case I've got to talk to my kid and not the official

I don't hate referees, I don't mind umpires or linejudges either.

What gets to me is when a coach tells me Im out of position (which I was), but it was due to the fact the play went in an unnatural direction. As a ref, I have to anticipate where the play is going to get into position to begin with. 98% of the time you are right, but when youre not you get caught (technically) out of position even though you really werent.
This is my attitude as well. You have to be in the right position. This allows you to at least make the best attempt you can with a call.

I don't hate refs, I just hate refs that miss obvious calls or that will not give one of the teams a chance to win the game.

In a game the other day one kid had 2 fouls with about 5:30 left in the game. He had 5 fouls by 4:00 left. Only one may have been a foul, but the other 2 weren't even close to being fouls. It did not affect the game as that team was down by 15 and lost the game.

If you are going to make calls, make them both ways, just be consistent.

I can tell you Ernest is right on when the play is bad the officiating can look bad too. Officiating two wrestlers that have no clue what they are doing is a workout. You are all over the place, blowing the whistle for this that and the other, and to the people that don't know the rules it looks to them like this official has no clue what he is doing on the mat!

I'm not siding with the referees in your story, but I will say that fans often can't see calls "both ways," therefore, their idea of what is being called "both ways" is usually a little distorted.

Went to a game last night where the refs probably missed a bunch of calls, but they let the kids play, and didn't make call for one team and then not make them for the other. I thought it was a very well officiated game because they were consistent, whereas in the other game, they were not.

That is what I strive for every game. Not perfection, but consistency. I had a game last week where I felt we called a few bad calls, but we called them on both teams. When you're consistent, more people are happy.
