If they would allow you to choose Verizon over AT&T as a data carrier I'd be more inclined to buy. AT&T may be slightly faster than Verizon, but at least I can get 3G outside of a major city with Verizon. I may live in Columbus, so I'd be covered here, but out in the country where my grandparents live or in Idaho where my parents live, there's no AT&T 3G coverage, but there is Verizon.

This device isn't redundant.

You can use your laptop for everything if you want but some people work better with other devices.

The iPad and HP's Slate (more the Slate) seem to be what we've been wanting from tablets/umpc's from the get go.

Verizon thumpers that whine about not having the iPhone seem to forget that Verizon runs in the CDMA network which is a completely different technology. Apple would have to re-design the iPhone/tablet to use the different technology.

ATT/Tmobile both use GSM, as does most carriers in the rest of the world. It's a waste of time to make a device that only a fraction of the world can actually "use".

They make great products no doubt, I have my iPod... and their computers are nice too (I just can't get used to them)

But they know that they've also become a status symbol and can release an oversized iPod Touch and charge (and get) a shitload of money for it regardless of what it can do.

It goes both ways.

By the way, I'll probably never own this device either and am a Windows guy myself. So don't think I'm a Mac fanboy when I defend this stupidly named yet interesting gadget.

Edit: Oh teh noes ts1227! A company is going to make profit. Those bastards!

The product is unlocked, meaning any carrier that supports the new micro SIM cards will be able to support this. I thought I heard that Verizon will be gradually switching over to GSM, so you may see Verizon support on this product down the road.

Down the road will be at least 10 years. It would take Verizon forever to change from CDMA to GSM.

Also, despite how cool this is I have a few disappointments:
Does it do multitasking?
Does it do handwriting recognition?
Does it have a camera?
Does it have a thin bezel?

I'm sure most if not all of these features will be second gen additions. Just like with the iPhone/iTouch. It took a little while before the iPhone had a camera or even before you could copy and paste.

I'm disappointed there wasn't a "one more thing" like usual. I was hoping for an update to the iphone OS or an announcement that the iphone was going to Verizon or something.

Yes blame the conumers, 100% agree!! If people didn't pay for it, they couldn't sell it, simple as that. It just like the people that complain that sporting events are overpriced, well guess what, they fill the stadiums every week and people pay it, so there is a market for it at that price.

There is a limited ereader market. This may have smashed the Kindle.
I would be more inclined to get this than the kindle. 500 bucks is pretty cheap for this kind of device.
since it has work productivity tools it looks like it would be something I could use. Then again, I think I am more inclined to just save the cash and buy a new macbook pro at the end of 2010

Wouldn't it be simpler to buy an iphone or an itouch and just download the Kindle app? I know this is bigger, but I just don't get the appeal of it.

Using an Iphone for extended periods of time is not enjoyable.
