What is racism/bigotry/prejudice? Seriously... what do YOU think they are?

(Can we PLEASE refrain from turning this into senseless drivel, and please add something positive, or negative, to this discussion).

Disclaimer: If you choose to "threadshit" and post something stupid, you are openly admitting you are gay (homo says what?) It's in the disclaimer, so if you do it, you are gay. It says so.

What exactly IS racism? Is it whites hating on blacks? Whites hating on asians? On mexicans? Whites hating on anybody? Blacks hating on whites?

This has become one of my biggest issues with mainstream society today. Racism. I personally don't think racism is an issue anymore. Yes, it exists, and I believe we ALL have our own prejudices, whether they are based on race or other things. There are just some things in life where we ALL say, "I don't agree with that" or "I don't like them because of that." It's human nature, and EVERYONE has at least ONE prejudice. If you say that you do not, then you have not examined yourself completely.

"I hate New England Patriots fans." I see that as a small form of a prejudice. I see it that way, because I am not just seeing that person as a person, but as a New England fan.

Racism... I think society uses it as weight, and that is it. It exists, yes, but it is just used to add weight to an argument. "YOU'RE A RACIST!" That comment has so much weight to it, and no one wants to be accused of it, so it is powerful.

What say you?

I do not know exactly what racism is. But I can tell you that I almost wrecked on some African American ice on the way to work today:D

A man escapes from prison where he has been for 15 years. He breaks into a house to look for money and guns and finds a young couple in bed.

He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair, while tying the girl to the bed he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he's in there, the husband tells his wife:

"Listen, this guy's an escaped convict, look at his clothes! He probably spent lots of time in jail and hasn't seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck." If he wants sex, don't resist, don't complain, do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is probably very dangerous. If he gets angry, he'll kill us. Be strong, honey. I love you."

To which his wife responds: "He wasn't kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked me if we had any vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you too!!"

Trueblue's reply says it best I'd say. You can consider me a racist..to an extent..as I'm sure you can with just about everyone. Most associate the 'N' word with a black person. I've never been one to associate that word with just one race. To me..the 'N' word can be used for ANY race. A *insert N word here* is any low life, worthless, piece of shit out there..whether your white, black, pink, yellow, or blue.

This is exactly what was wrong with all of you thin skinned little pussies. There is nothing wrong with my post. All that I was doing was illustrating a little "black" humor.

Tell me what the fuck racism has to do with being gay. The two subjects are not remotely related.

To get back to the point. my "jest" had to do with people's reluctance to use the word black. Heritage and nationality have nothing to do with race.

A more technical term would be "negroid" if you are refering to someone with a darker skin color. I guess that would be offensive as well.

Ok, so I am a bone smoker. Does this make me less of a person, or you just envy the fact that I have the balls and use them with other men.

What the fuck ever. You sir are a Hypocrite and a DB. you are not worth the effort to type dooche.

Devils, I understand completely what you were doing, and I laughed a little. BUT, it is what I wanted to try and steer away from on this thread, b/c that is what will lead to the thread getting shut down.

Well, to be honest, I think alot of people need to figure out the differences and definitions between racism, bigotry, prejudice, and just plain old prickish behavior. Perhaps the wolf pack behavior that we see all the time will diminish upon some new horizons.

I'm gonna let this thread go as long as it stays on topic and doesn't get personal. This is a very touchy subject so bear in mind that we're all walking on thin ice with this one.

Also most people aren't racist but when they hate someone of a different (or even same) race for presonal reason they start to bring out the names and stereotypes. Just because these names are so engrained in society. Not that its right, but it is how people react and it doesn't mean they are racist.

We as a species tend to put people into categories starting with "friend" or "foe"... "ally or "threat"...."similar to us" or "different".....and it progresses down to the most minute aspects of daily life, eg. "OSU or UM." We want to quantify everyone in neat little packages, not realizing that evryone is in fact multidimensional. Racism is just one of these aspects, but it gets a lot of play in the U.S. because of our history. More signinficantly than in other things we have historically based judgements of people on skin color. While we have legislated away the 'rights' differences as we try for equality, we have perpetuated categorization of people by race and even institutionalized it. The net effect of checking a box on a form categorizing race, affirmative action, and other government policies, is to draw attention to the difference between people based on skin color. As long as we continue to this rather than emphasizing similarities, we will continue to view people by how they are 'labelled'.
Rather than 'melting pot' we now emphasize 'diversity'. We are not 'Americans"...but white Americans or African Americans or hispanic Americans. The effect of this is to perpetuate racism by keeping people, and our perception of them in little boxes.
The tendency to do this is present in other aspects of life too...religion, nationality, economic system, and has been used to justify wars and atrocities by emphasizing the difference between 'our group' and 'the other'.

This has been my soapbox for years. I absolutely loath prefixes or hyphenated anything before "American".
You are American only or you're not. Or you have dual citizenship.

The Orgin of the word Racism ...............Sexology

According to the second edition (1989) of the OED, the earliest known usage of the word "racism" in English occurred in a 1936 book by the American "fascist", Lawrence Dennis, The Coming American Fascism. The second usage of the term in English that the OED records is in the title of a book originally written in German in 1933 and 1934 but translated into English and first published in 1938 -- Racism by Magnus Hirschfeld, translated by Eden and Cedar Paul. Since Hirschfeld died in 1935, before the publication of Dennis' book the following year, and had already used the word extensively in the text and title of his own book, it seems only fair to recognize him rather than Dennis as the originator of the word "racism". In the case of the word "racist" as an adjective, the OED ascribes the first known usage to Hirschfeld himself. Who was Magnus Hirschfeld and what did he have to tell us about "racism"?

Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) was a German-Jewish medical scientist whose major work was in the field of what came to be known as "sexology" -- the scientific study of sex. Like Havelock Ellis in England and Alfred Kinsey in the United States, Hirschfeld was not only among the first to collect systematic information about sexuality but also was an apostle of sexual "liberation". His major work was a study of homosexuality, but he also published many other books, monographs, and articles dealing with sex. He wrote a five-volume treatise on "sexology" as well as some 150 other works and helped write and produce five films on the subject.
