About the pass happy comment.......typically over the years if there is a recipe in beating the Steelers it has been through the air mostly with short quick passes to negate the rush. They did not show the game here and the web sucks to stream radio so i had to follow on game cast so I'm not sure if that is what they were trying to do. As far as the game goes:
Kizer gets a "C" from me. Showed some flashes and real nice throws but also missed some wide open looks. Didn't read through this thread but Joe Haden was blessed that he was facing a rookie QB in his Steeler debut because, just like in C-Town, he let three receivers get behind him, for what should've been long gains, and Kizer missed. The holding onto the ball is MADDENING. He took 7 sacks, 6 of which should've been balls he threw away. We're going to hear the media slurp all over the Watt kid's knob all week when, if he faces a decisive QB, with a quick release, he gets nothing.
The defense looked very solid, especially against the run, but NO pass rush. Was a little disappointed in Gregg Williams not trying to dial up more blitzes. This unit had too many "near misses" (the Schobert tip, which was excellent concentration for Brown to haul in that tipped ball, and that dumbass pass that they didn't defend at the end of the game that should've been an INT).
As I believe like_that & COA may have mentioned, Hue was being "pass happy" again. Have to get Crowell going.
Oh, and special teams? GFY. Giving up a blocked punt to set the tone for the game.
Overall, pissed that they couldn't pull this off because they took a supposed "Super Bowl contender" down to the wire, but not a shitty effort as we've seen before. As was mentioned, not a fan of moral victories.
If he makes it through the season, and plays a full 16 games, I bet that come draft time they won't be using a high pick on a QB. The reason I say this is that I expect improvement from week to week and if he starts all 16 games, they should have enough to go on. So far, he's promising but has to learn to throw the ball away and have better pocket awareness. The impression I got is that he could have a confidence issue that he'd need to overcome but that was due to Brian Kelly. Haden is fortunate that Kizer isn't the most accurate QB. There were three different occasions where a receiver got behind him and Kizer missed. Duke Johnson was wide open for a probable TD when Kizer missed. Haden’s first game in a new uniform coincidentally came against his former team. While he broke up a pass early on, the rest of his outing was average at best. He didn’t give up any major plays, but did allow six catches for 80 yards and a 106.3 passer rating into his coverage.
He gave a couple opportunities deep but Kizor didn't make him pay. Haden at this point in his career looks about like every Steelers CB since Rod Woodson. Kizer has always been a very mature kid. His parents are absolutely great people and really raised him right and always held him accountable. At ND he never shied away from the moment. He would take a hit and get back up and not be rattled at all, so what we saw yesterday really didn't surprise me. Brian Kelly is a complete idiot and that had a lot to do with ND last year and Kizer. For whatever reason he thought Zaire was a better qb. I agree with all of this. My little brother used to work out with him in the summer catching passes for him. I was invited but was always too busy. Plus I have family that is basically a legend at Toledo cc.
