You go to Menard's home improvement store to buy some FIY supplies. Total amount paid after going through checkout is $70. You get everything loaded into your vehicle when your wife says, "We only paid $70 for that? Let me see the receipt." She looks at it and discovers that you have over $130 worth of supplies you did not pay for even though everything was scanned.

At this point, what do you do?:
a. go back in the store with the items that weren't scanned and pay for them, or
b. drive away

This scenario happened to a friend recently at the Menards in Massillon. It made me wonder how OCer's would handle this situation.

Go back and pay. I've done it a few times. Walmart employees aren't exactly the brightest Crayons in the box.

If I self scanned I would seek help to get it fixed....if they scanned everything themselves...I'm going home with the good deal.

Save big money at Menards! Menards has cashiers scan everything.

I'm going home. Their mistake, my gain.

Were there things they missed scanning? Or were the prices lower than you expected?

If the prices were lower than i expected I'm not arguing. If they sucked at scanning I'm probably still not arguing but i would think about it.

I bought some stuff at a local auction once and they gave me receipts, but i realized when i got home they had under charged me $400 even though i had a ticket for everything i bought. It is a local company and i know the owner so i went back and paid what i owed.

If it was like $10-20 or less I'm not going to waste my time but $130 is a lot. I couldn't in good conscious not go back in and pay for it.

Items were all hand scanned except one which was hand entered on the number key pad. Even the hand-entered item never showed up on the receipt!

Also, fuck Menards. I bought a garage door and exterior door there back in February. I asked them to let me know everything I would need to buy with it for the contractor to install them. They explained that the garage door kit came with everything needed.

And of course had to drive back the 60 min round trip to get two more pieces once they began installing the door.

When I was in high school the Easton bats became huge and everyone had to have these black with yellow loaded bats. They were $100-$120 everywhere. Never less than $100 and typically $110. Dad and I went to a sports store in Chillicothe and bats were below checkout counter. We were buying one and it was listed $110. Girl scanned it and said "$10"...and some odd change. Dad and I just looked at each other. Dad repeated the price and she said yes. Took home a new top of the line bat for under $11. Our truthfulness was not buying the other 15 bats they had there and selling them for $100 a pop.

Not surprising...that sports store didn't last a long time in that strip mall.

I agree with this. It's not my job to manage the cashiers or the business.

If I noticed while I was still on store property, odds are I'd bring it up. If I'd made it home and then found out I paid less, fuck 'em. Their inability to properly do their job isn't my fault, nor my responsibility to correct.

Nope. But if it were, it would've been buy one get 2 free! Totally a scanning error, either human or machine error.

Also, reverse the roles. If you overpaid and left without knowing, would they go out of their way to tell you? My guess is probably not.

A one time in my life, I would have driven away. Now I would probably go back inside to correct the mistake. Not because I'm looking our for Menard's, but because I find my conscience bothers me on this type of thing more than it used too. I don't think I'm any better than anyone else who would drive away. For all I know, there are things I do that they would find objectionable.

I routinely get screwed by the grocery store here (I audit the receipt and catch it most of the time) so unless it's a glaring error, I'm taking my couple of dollars if they screw it up.

The only reason I would hesitate about going back is the possibility of ending up there for 45 minutes while they try to figure out the issue.

Pretty much agree with everything. I would call them a day later to let them know that I just noticed one of their employees made a mistake. I would inform them that I would be willing to correct it but they would have to come to me to recuperate their loss. In my line of work (not alone here) if I screw up I come to them to correct the mistake, should be the same in this situation. So yeah if they don't come to me, fuck'em

I would have walked back in and said something, but I wouldn't have argued with them if they disagreed with me. I know, I've seen me do it.
