Sidebar- Do ppl still have wedding showers? My mom got invited to one recently for a friend of her's daughter. The couple has lived together for 4 yrs, and are now getting married. WTF? Yes, and I have the same thoughts. Some families are just big on tradition and all about those gifts.

Crock pots, panini grills, coffee pots, could go on and on. If I am part of a wedding and have to pay for a tux/dress etc, I would look for the cheapest gift that would become a lifetime memory for the B&G. If I am invited to a wedding as a guest I would probably spend a bit more. It is a difficult task to buy for someone that you are just acquainted with than someone you really know. A cheap meaningful gift from a true friend from my wedding party would hover over a gift of expense from some rich dude I barely know, my personal thoughts.

Mine was about $12,000. National average is a lot more, but you can have a legit wedding for way less.

I've been to one wedding that was sub $10k and it was terrible. The food sucked, the DJ sucked, the venue sucked, the drinks sucked; hope you had a good one!

Yeah for example, the last wedding I went to the couple told me they negotiated the venue price from $100k to $90k for the day. $90k just for venue; you can imagine that the wedding was pretty solid but it wasn't over the top.

It was at the Mayflower in DC; probably one of the most historic hotels in the country that's hosted inaugural balls for Presidents among other key notable events(Obama launched his Presidential campaign there for example).

When was this wedding? I went to the a wedding at the same spot. I actually thought it would be more than 90K.

I stand corrected anyway. The wedding I was thinking of was at the Willard. They had a "welcome" cocktail event the night before at the Hay Adams. Probably more/less the same price range as the Mayflower. It's definitely a ridiculous amount of $$ for a wedding.

I don't disagree but it's not my money. I didn't find the wedding any more fun than other much cheaper weddings except for the food/drink being much better.

I have been to cheap weddings that have been fun and cheap ones that have sucked. I also have been to expensive weddings that have sucked and expensive weddings that have been fun. I think the main factors are the people and music.

It's all about the people, music, and drinks. I'm in the same boat. I've been to weddings that you know they spent a fortune and they sucked. And I've been to backyard shindig weddings that have been awesome.
