There was a lot of talk, especially here in Cleveland, during the season as to whether the Browns were doing a tank job. Many people thought they were. Regardless of what people want to call it, this roster purge was a necessity. The team kept bringing in overpriced free agents (guys like Bowe, Whitner, previously McGinest, etc) who were looking to cash in on their last contract but brought no real value to the table. That's why I had no issue with them not re-signing Alex Mack. They needed to clean the slate to start over, building from the ground up. In fact, this should've been done years ago. If they have any desire to build a long-term winning culture, they had to blow it up.

I don't think tanking is a big deal in the NFL. In basketball, one player can really turn around a franchise especially if it's a LBJ type where it's worth blowing an entire season to get them.
In football, even sure fire talent like Luck isn't worth blowing a season. The Colts are a better team with him but he didn't do anything to impact the league's competitive balance or integrity.

Yeah, I think Polian was a great GM, but he is full of shit. And now Garrett gets injured (foot) and limps off the field. Will have multiple tests today for what some are saying could be serious.

I'm concerned it's serious. He injured it yesterday late and I feel like if it were a sprain they would have already said it. I'm thinking he's getting 2nd opinions now for how severe the injury is. Different situations (one was a free agent, one a top draft pick) but I'm having LeCharles Bentley flashbacks. Green Beckman was released by the Eagles. I recall him having his way with Haden couple yrs back, bent him over a barrel and showed him the 50 states. Wouldn't mind kicking the tires on him, if nothing else a RZ threat.

It was basically a "quarterback is the most important player on the field, STFU about 'bolstering the trenches'' or 'building up the defense" exercise as they constantly have the "build up the defense/O-Line" callers calling in, wanting to put off the QB decision, year in and year out.

You start with the QB and build from there, not vice versa. Belichick was only selected because the same guy who had Brady admitted that was the only reason he took him. You'd be surprised some of these morons here in Cleveland who think they should just build up the trenches and bolster the defense, waiting for that QB to come along. Its definitely possible to win a SB with a great line/running games and dominating Def. See 2002 TB, Ravens, Broncos, Seahawks as examples of SB winners with that formula. I think bolstering the line/trenches/etc is important too, but if you think that's going to overcome a shitty QB you are a moron. I don't see an issue though building that way until you find a QB that you believe can be a starter. When you draft a QB just to get a QB, you have a situation where Weeden is your starting QB with 0 years of experience at 29 years old. The 2014 draft is there the Browns really fucked up (Manziel draft). Even though Gordon turned out to be a fucking idiot I think we all felt the browns were trending in a positive direction after developing some promising players and trading T-rich for a first round pick.
