Granted I have not followed MLB at all this season (fuck the dolans). But how in the world do the Pirates have the second best record in baseball, and have to play a 1 game playoff?

For the same reason a 7-9 NFL team can host a playoff game. Because it's more important to reward teams for being the best in a certain geographic area than it is to reward teams for just being the best.

Pirates a touch nervous looking.

At no point have I thought Cole was a good matchup for that young fastball hitting lineup.

[h=1]COLE'S FIRST-INNING STRUGGLES CONTINUE[/h]
The Cubs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the NL wild-card game over Gerrit Cole and the Pirates thanks to Kyle Schwarber's RBI single. Cole entered the start with a 3.94 ERA in the first inning this season, compared to 2.35 in all other innings. Follow live

Cubs have posted shutouts in 6 of Arrieta's last 12 starts. 2 of them were against the Pirates. He gave up a total of 4 runs (3 earned) in 5 starts against them this year.

All I said was "might", but would it really surprise you?

It would me. If the playoffs weren't different Kershaw would have led the Dodgers much more in the postseason.

What Arrieta has done is amazing....but this is different. I expect him to be very good still (7 1/3 2 ER)

Holy Hell...I'll guess 480 feet and into the river.

Cole is not ready for this stage.

This ump has rung up 2 in row with runner on....both pitches not even touching K zone....terrible. Pirates aren't getting any help at home. The HP ump seem to be out of his league here.

Well....that is it. Pirates had him and Marte wasn't patient and hits into the GIDP. Why Bryant was where he was and snagging that shot by Polanco was a back breaker.....had a good chance for 2+ runs that inning.

I will now officially calling this game over.

Arrieta has allowed 3 hits at 107 mph or above and Pirates hit 3 in a row 107-107-107 and another 109.....cannot catch a break and Bryant has been perfectly positioned twice to make 3 outs on those 4 rockets.

Same philosophy for the Blackhawks- I'll go and take advantage of the great partying opportunity. But I won't cheat for the Chicago teams. Not a bandwagoner.

I haven't been this hungover at work in a looooong time.

Great win. I feel bad for the Pirates. 2nd best record in MLB and they're done.

With that said, onward we go! Time for the Cardinals, the one team I truly despise.

This Cubs team is going to be scary over the next few years.

It is ridiculous; if they are going to have 2 wild card teams, it has to be at least a 3 game set. Otherwise, drop the second wild card team, and the 4 teams in each league play 7 game series' --- that's how you find out which team, overall, is the best.

There must have been a dozen pitches well off the plate that he got a strike call on. This is a pitcher that doesn't need help, so if he gets those calls you may as well hang it up.
