ABSOLUTELY
Byrd. Gone after this year. Get filler prospects for him.
Leake. He's not that good and he's way too expensive to consider an extension.
Phillips. He's owed a ton of money for what has become a guy with no power, no speed and a glove only.
Frazier. The way he's hitting, he's going to be commanding David Wright-type money. He's 29 years old and if he's not getting paid by you after 2017, why not deal him when he's a top 3 3B in baseball.
POSSIBLY
Bruce. A free agent in 2 years, again, are you going to pay him 12-15M on an extension.
Chapman. In a perfect world, you keep him because he's that dominant. One has to wonder how long he will last AND how much do you really want to invest in a guy who you refuse to pitch more than 70 innings anyway.
I know others disagree and there's an argument to deal Cueto, but don't give me the BS "they can't afford him." Nonsense. You can't afford to pay him 8 years/200M, but combined you can pay Bruce, Phillips, Leake, Chapman, Byrd over 50M?
Sure, it's a big commitment and it really locks you down with Votto, Bailey and Cueto essentially being 60% of your payroll for the next 5 years, but don't deal Johnny, and hand out 2 or 3 contracts to the likes of Phillips, Bruce, Frazier, Leake, Cozart, etc...that would more than equal Cueto's contract. None of those guys are irreplaceable or worth more than Johnny.
The biggest thing holding the Reds back? Their complete negligence in being able to develop young hitters. It forces them to keep Frazier, Bruce, Phillips, Cozart, etc. Their strength is in pitching, which is probably why Leake and Cueto are goners.
Byrd: Yes. Not sure they will get much though.
Leake: Same as Byrd.
Phillips: Again, yeah, but what are they going to get other than a salary dump?
Frazier: I say no way. Reds have him for next year, arbitration year from 2017 before he hits the FA market. Will he cost alot in 2017 in arbitration? Probably, but that is just a one year deal. I think he is a guy you stick with because he basically is under the reds control for 2.5 years.
I get what you are saying with Cueto, but he will be commanding 200 million.
I was always in the corner of making chapman a starter. As a closer.....he is great and strkes out a ton of people but he can be replaced. Not saying the numbers would be the same but Hoover has a .22 ERA if you take out that one bad game......and I know, closing is different but the sentiment is the same that you can get someone to be a solid closer. Ya dont need a guy who strikes out 2/inning
