Interesting article on how email might become obsolete by 2020 with so many other social media forms of communications being used. 5 years is a long time in the tech field and a yet-to-be invented communications forum is predicted.

Is this guy correct? Do you find yourself using email less and less?

Yep. I check my email about twice a week, at most, anymore.

I have one friend I email regularly. And by regularly, I mean 1-2 times a week at most.

Other than that, I use it for work communications because it's easier and less time-consuming than actually calling people, but barely anything else.

I send and receive at least two dozen emails at work every day. Zero chance the healthcare industry will no longer be using email in five years.

In my profession, I have sent 6,016 emails since June 1, 2013. I doubt email will go away for me either.

I work for an agency and can guarantee we (the company at least, I won't still be here in 5 year) will still be using email in 2020. Something like Slack could definitely catch on for internal correspondence, but email will almost certainly be needed for client correspondence.

This may come full circle.

I remember when I started to use this kind of system to communicate, it was called SYSM where I had worked in the early/mid 90's. Then later it exploded and everyone had email.

Now it may come back to being used more in the business sector.

I check mine 3-4 times a week. Maybe send a couple of week but rarely use it anymore.

Inbox for Gmail is making me check email less and less...which is weird, because I'd think they'd want you to be in their interface more...

anywho, Inbox basically data mines the everliving shit out of your email and puts things into categories for you based on metadata and what not. I find myself only checking my personal email main folder like twice a week. I'll have hundreds of what I now call "spam" emails that really aren't spam but I would have just glossed over them/deleted them outright before.

For work though... email is used heavily. Calling people is whack. We have an IM type thing too, but for file sharing and record keeping email is a necessity.

Inbox is great. It definitely saves me a ton of time checking email.

Not for business use. Get at least 30 a day to 40 or more. Granted some are reports being generated. When you work for companies with warehouses all over the U.S. And hq / plants in other countries there is no other way to communicate right now. Even if something was invented today, it would take more than 5 years for it to be adopted, especially due to encryption and privacy issues. Hell, some companies haven't gotten off of black berries due to their security perks.

I get/send about 100 emails a week. Often more if we are having problems onsite.

No way. Emails are way too prominent in the business world. I can't see this happening... not yet at least.

Yeah, I guess some people are lucky enough not to have to deal with work email. Not only is it quicker and more convenient than the phone, but it's a time-stamped, written record...which can be kind of critical.

I'll send a few texts to friends, but I quickly lose patience after a few exchanges and just make a call.

And "messenger" or whatever they might use at work is just evil if you don't change the default setting to mark you away after 5 minutes of inactivity.

I was wondering if anyone out there is using Google's Inbox yet. I've seen several articles about it, and I've been tempted several times myself to download it and start using it... but I find myself asking why would I switch to Inbox when Gmail ​is perfect and essentially does everything I need? Just curious what others thought...

I was just going to post the opposite, in a sense.

As in, Im sure thats EXACTLY what people 20 years ago were asking...when Email took over. There will always be a new way to do things.

This. Plus, unless you are getting hundreds of emails a day, that doesn't seem necessary since it takes 5 seconds to either delete or put it in a folder. Either way, I like google for a lot of things, but i hate Gmail.
