In my experience, you usually know a person is an atheist much faster than if they belong to a religion. In fact, they usually are able to work it into the conversation immediately (similar to vegans, PETA followers, and crossfitters).

There's a radio personality called Phil Hendrie who does all sorts of characters for his show. He is very funny. One of his characters is a guy named Doug Danger. The schtick with this character is he prefaces everything he says with "I'm a gay man and a gay journalist". He then goes on about how that gives him unique insight into events in the world. He says it over and over and it drives callers nuts - since they think he's a real guy and not Hendrie's creation. Anyway, check him out online. The point of this character is to show the obnoxiousness of people who have to throw out their special category over and over. That he's gay is only a vehicle to make the point.
