I saw something on the news about this last night I think, about how this woman got 'cat called'/sexually harassed all day on her ten hour walk as an experiment.

http://news.yahoo.com/woman-seen-harassed-nyc-streets-video-gets-rape-180905117.html

Yeah, she is kinda hot and all, and if she walked by me she would get a second look and all, but to really say stuff to her? Not sure she is that sexy ya know!

Also the video is so stupid. It's just another non-profit who's raising awareness; also known as creating an issue to give them an undeserved bloated salary for a few years until the fad dies off.

Not in the sense that she got harassed but in the sense that this dumb bitch actually took the time to put a camera to herself as she walked the streets

What in the hell are these donations they're asking for going to go to? How do you stop "vocal harassment" in a city?

The notion of setting up a non-profit for this is, really, just a way for people to get paid.

To be fair, some of those reactions were disrespectful, but some were just people being polite.

"How are you this morning?"

"Have a nice evening."

"Hello. Good morning."

"How are you doing? Good?"

"God bless you. Have a good day, alright?" (from a guy who then walks alongside her for 5 minutes ... because of course nobody could possibly walk the same route for a five-minute stretch in a big city, right?)

Don't get me wrong. Talking to someone as though they're a sex object isn't okay. However, this vilifies far more than that. It vilifies pleasantry and simple friendliness by assuming that those things are motivated by sex, and anyone who applies any critical thinking to the video will notice this, I think.

Potentially a good experiment, but a disingenuous delivery of the results.

If she really did that much walking she'd be a little less thick.

The whole thing is stupid.

But, I personally thought every one of the comments carried sexual connotation.

The clothes weren't unusually so, though. In contemporary terms, her clothes are pretty plain. Mainstream fit. No excess skin showing. No loud colors.

If given more context, they might have been. It's not without precedent that a person is simply polite in an attempt to get someone's attention.

However, "Hello. Good morning," without context, carries no sexual connotation. It's a colloquial pleasantry. Had the recipient of the comment's gender changed, we wouldn't see it as sexual, I don't think, even if everything else was the same.

Donations are for the organization to pay their admins a decent salary. Then they will do a few PR stunts that cost basically nothing and say they are combating street harassment. It's a money grab from the poor and stupid.

The words themselves are harmless.

But nobody is sitting there saying those things to everyone they pass in the morning unless they are trying to get someone's attention (99% for sexual reasons). Unless they are homeless lol.

This is so true.

Biggest lie about non-profits is that none of them care about money.

I completely agree with you that if you speak to someone, you're wanting them to pay attention ... at very least to what you've said. Otherwise, there's no point in speaking at all.

However, why do you think that 99% of unprompted greetings are for sexual reasons? Hell, I greet strangers all the time in passing, just to be cordial.

And again, I'm not saying I'm certain that any one of them is platonic in motivation. I actually think you're probably right. I'm just saying that I don't see anything that tells me for sure, and greeting someone with some socially-acceptable platitude isn't without precedent in our culture.
