If they just settle for getting into the acceptable range it will be more affected by lighter rain, or as you said, even if it looks like it may rain. If they take the time and get it to the best signal possible it will be less affected by rain and less likely to go out. Rain will lower the signal level many times, but most times it is still good enough to get a good picture.

but yeah..snow can fuck you up and have to wipe it off and depending where they install the dish it could be a bitch to get to.
^^^This.

If your sat goes out in every snow and most rains, it's due to a shitty installation. Sounds like the installer half-assed the alignment.

Mine rarely goes out. Only on heavy, heavy rains and heavy, heavy snows. And when it does go out, 95% of the time it's for 5 minutes or less.

Correct. I had ours when we lived in town and I had a narrow band between trees to catch the signal. So I'm sure it would be better in an open area. To compare, we now live in the country and have Dish Network, and never have any issue because we have a clear view.

I have Direct TV and really like it. I live high up in an in an Apt building and the dish sits on the railing. Snow has never really put it out, but heavy rains will mess it up sometimes.

I haven't compared prices but Direct TV DVR is huge which I love. I got most of the of the movie channels when I signed up and just DVR'd everything I might ever want to watch. I have probably 50+ movies, every episode of Breaking Bad, and some other stuff and am still only 70% full. I cancelled the movie channels but still have what I want on the DVR.

Also, you get a free year of NFL package when signing up with Direct TV, which is very nice.

When we moved we went from DTV to Dish Network. Our DVR is much, much larger with Dish Network.

I've had more issues with ice than anything with Direct tv's dish. You may lose some channels or completely out for a few minutes during hard rain but ice is the kicker during the cold months.
You're going to want your dish set up someplace where its easy access.

Hair drier and a few feet of pvc tubing for the win.

Crazy thing is they both charge an outrageous monthly fee to have their DVR boxes. Really makes Direct TV and Dish jump up in price. I won't do TWC for anything but internet though.

This, and I keep my dish coated with Rain-X. It seems to help considerably, especially with preventing snow build-up.

What's the prices you are looking at? I pay around $72 per month for 250 channels and whole home DVR -- I also have 3 receivers with the Hopper. I thought this was a VERY reasonable price compared to all other options I had. I was paying over $90-100 for regular cable then add in the internet it bumped it up to $130-140 per month.

We also get many more channels -- I paid extra for the particular sports packages to get all the soccer channels I wanted/needed.

Direct TV is showing $77.99 for whole home DVR and 3 receivers
DISH is $74.00 a month for the same thing.

I just wonder what the jump up is after the 12 or 24 months. I currently pay $168 for AT&T Uverse internet and cable.

What extra sports package did you get? I see BeIN comes with it. We watch a ton of soccer now.

Maybe I didn't end up getting another one then. I know I was trying to ensure I got all the soccer I could too. I'd have to check the bill again.
