Ohio State University has fired the director of its marching band and is expanding an internal investigation that uncovered a deep culture of sexual harassment among students that reportedly has existed for years.

Oh, those crazy band geeks...
Examples of abuse include an annual midnight band practice at Ohio Stadium in which men and women were expected to march wearing only their underwear. In one recent year, a student suffered alcohol poisoning at the practice. Students led the rehearsal, but staff members, including Waters, were there, too.

Some other traditions: All new band members, or “rookies,” were given nicknames, many of which were sexually explicit. Rookies were forced to perform “tricks” on command. In one case, a female student was told to imitate a sexual act on the laps of other band members, including her brother.

Several witnesses said that students performed a “flying 69” on tour buses, in which band members hung from the luggage racks and posed in a sexual position. Waters was on the bus when that happened as recently as last fall, according to a band staff member who quit last year.

I can't tell if this is legit or a politically correct boondoggle. The way they're handling it makes me suspect the latter. Maybe it'll relegate the marching band to the back burned where it belongs. Making shapes on the field and playing the fight songs do not warrant the adulation it gets.

It's about pride. The band is a visual representation of the greatest school in world history and the pride that each Ohioan has in its home team. It's not about shapes and music. Stop being a grumpy old man.

Its fucking band, they play instruments... Harassment, hard work and nick name thin out the weak and it about time some learn about sex, what better place than college this maybe the only place many of the band geeks get socially accepted.

After reading the dispatch report nothing would have even caused me to blink when I was involved in team sports. Every coach at my high school would have been fired under these rules. Times they are a changin.

Nicknames, underwear practices, etc. would not bother me. But having to imitate a sexual act on my brother's lap...#nope. Would not be a huge fan of that.

Will most of the band members who participated in this be kicked out? Seems like the only answer if they were doing something so horrible it got the band director fired for just knowing about it.

I talked to a co worker who was in the OSU band. He had a little more information and read the whole report. From what he told me this has happened for as long as he has known. He was in the band from 1992-1996 and said these were all standard practices. He also said almost everything in the referenced in the reports are band traditions at OSU. The report talks about certain songs in the band book each member is given. He said some of those songs are so old you can tell they were typed on typewriters and not printed off computers. He said basically their giving the director the boot for things that happened before he was there and that from what he had heard the guy was cleaning up a little bit at a time.

^^^That's the way it usually goes, ain't it? Somebody gets a burr up their ass and the pc police think they have to act swiftly, so they chop off the head. Now, how long before the band director files a lawsuit??

Sounding more and more like a made up scandel of the PC variety. I assume most of the band's best "shot" is with another band member. So just let them be with their little games and rites of passages. Until they make an X rated shape on the field while playing some French marching tune, leave it alone. One of Meyer's recruits will rape some coed soon enough and this will all look silly.

Sleeper, I am very proud of Ohio State and my degree. The marching band plays zero part in tyhat.
