I am continuously hearing of this every day of someone "forgetting" their child leaving them in the car while they go about their business. I don't get people claims that they forgot their kid was in the car, I damn sure know when my daughter is in the car with me. What's wrong with people these days?

I think I saw somewhere that 70-80 kids have died so far in 2014 because of this. Crazy. I don't understand it.

They've really focused on that couple in Florida over the past few weeks. When it happened, there was a huge outcry that the dad was a good guy, it was surely an accident, and sending him to jail on murder charges would be further devastating for the family. There was even a petition going around for people to sign. Now, a lot of incriminating evidence has come out suggesting the parents planned this.

I've never driven in a car with a toddler, but I can't imagine that (unless they're asleep), they are completely silent that you could even forget they're there in the first place.

Putting the car seat behind the drivers seat is one way to forget they're back there. If they're asleep and you can't see them in the rearview then i can see how you could space it out. Leave them on the passenger side, you see them everytime you look in the mirror or over your shoulder to switch lanes.

I wonder how many of these people actually get convicted?
I know a few years ago when some high profile cases came out I checked out some things and many of the adults were getting off the charges.

No doubt that some are legit accidents, but also no doubt that some parents see it as a way to get rid of kids. SIckos

The only reason I can think of is the parent simply wants their child gone. Which is absolutely pathetic.

There needs to be harsher death penalties for people like this...I saw something the other day where a black woman suffocated her child because she didn't want him anymore. Then immediately posted on Facebook how she is gonna miss him.

Someone like that needs to be thrown in a room full of flesh hungry wolves.

I do believe there are cases where it truly is an accident. If someone has a daily routine it almost becomes an autopilot situation. Sometimes I get to work in the morning and don't even remember my commute. If it not typically that parent's "job" to drop the child at daycare or school, and the baby is sleeping peacefully in the back, I can understand how it can happen.

I agree with Fab4Runner, there are instances where it is truly a mistake, but on the other hand most educated people should know to check every single door in the car to be locked and secure and all things that need to go out - go out. I feel stupid if I leave a water bottle in the car. Don't have to worry about the dog because he likes to stick his butt in my face with his head outside the moonroof - hard to forget that.

I have to believe neither of you have kids. We're not talking about animals (which would be sad unto itself) or inanimate objects, we're talking about your CHILD. There is no reason, excuse, whatever, short of what S&L said (leaving them there intentionally) or being too drunk or high. You do not simply forget your child is in the car. Period.

It can happen but it doesn't excuse responsibility from the parents.

Perhaps this has to do with regulations that require child seats to be rear facing and in the secondary seating area. If one is driving a honking GMC Denali there can be a lack of visual proximity - that isn't an excuse. People should check all doors when they leave the vehicle (takes what, 10 seconds?), but I'm very curious how many lives have been saved with stringent child seat rules that in some jurisdictions expect 12 year olds to sit in the backseat.

I cannot even begin to understand how it could possibly happen. No excuse.

If you don't want your kid, at least drop them off at a local mission or church. Give them a chance. Don't leave them strapped in to bake to death in a vehicle. This whole thing makes me sick.

I'm sorry, but I'm baffled by someone, anyone, saying it could be an accident. How can leaving your infant, your own flesh and blood who depends on you for everything, behind in a vehicle (on any kind of fricking day) be an accident? I'm really irritated by this, but I have to assume it's because the people saying it don't have kids of their own and haven't a clue.
