I never went to a regional campus, so I wouldn't know, but say if you did to to OSU Marion, doesn't the degree still say "tOSU" with no mention of Marion? Reason I assume that is because I know people who went to OHio U Eastern and they would always be like " my degree still says OU on it"

Employment numbers are not great statistics. They're something, but they don't paint the whole picture.

People who looked for work and then gave up without finding anything are EXCLUDED from the "work force" numbers, which essentially lowers the unemployment figure.

I'm aware of how the unemployment number works. All things relative, it is the best measurement we have to work with, unless you are trying to make some point that more people have given up searching for work in Cleveland or Cincinnati than DC or NYC.

And nothing is ever going to be normal when you are a criminology major trying to get a job in an IT field.

I find it hard to believe that "everyone else" agrees that recruiters are useless or incredibly unhelpful. If that was the case, the industry would not exist. Just curious, but how where the recruiters you worked with incredibly unhelpful?

Submitting a resume yourself works about as often as a fat guy trying to pick up a hot chick at a bar (assuming the fat guy also has no money...chicks dig money). You need a connection, and a lot of the time that comes in the form of a recruiter/head hunter. Just blindly submitting resumes online and waiting for a call back is not the best way to get a job.

Its almost as if they had blinders on and cherry picked "help desk" out of my resume and that's all they'd recommend, even though I hadn't done it in 5 years.

Agree with this. It is all about connections, and even then it might not help. Just to check the market I sent a resume/cv to a very close friend of the wife (she's going to be in their wedding in October) at a Fortune 100 company. I couldn't even get an interview. I have no idea how bad it is for people recently graduating from college.

IT recruiters are probably great for developers, but for virtually every other position they're not helpful.
IT recruiters are very helpful. A lot of companies don't even hire direct anymore without going contract to see if you fit. Maybe not helpful with you but I've been in the industry a very long time and everyone I know has used recruiters and they are very helpful. I spent the majority of my IT career at a Fortune 500 company hired originally by contract. We only hired through contracts. IT department of over 700+.

The crux of the thread was pointing out how the lack of economic growth in this country (due largely to the anti-growth and anti-business policies of the current administration) is hampering the ability of millions of people, including new graduates, to find meaningful work. Millions have simply lost hope and have stopped looking. Millions more cannot find the type of work they were educated for (yes, some of that is the student's fault etc). We had a horrific recession, and although we want to recover from it, we have an administration whose policies will not allow it to happen. Sadly, the public schools and many universities continue to turn out many who are unprepared and unable to recognize this fact. Maybe a few more years of living in the parent's basement is required for the lights to go on and the barack love-fest to end.

It should go to the politics forum.

I don't get it. I worked for 3 Vault-250 places that at in the aggregate hired about 90 people for their respective summer programs.

My last place = 0

Second place = 4

Third place = 0

No one is hiring. I don't know why, or how the unemployment rate has fallen but it isn't because of hiring.

It's not pride, its reality. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a degree and believe that it is the #1 school on the planet. US News can have their own opinion based on broken metrics that favor old institutions with larger endowments; what is Harvard or Yale doing to change the world? US News is lazy, they don't even try to be unbiased. I'd take the best and brightest of OSU against the best and brightest of any school on the planet.

I think Dawson is doing the video resumes...I think those are dumb as well. Some recruiters are really good, some are not, just have to find a couple that listen to what you are looking for and not just trying to fill the current opening. Did you ever follow up with the recruiting companies yourself to get feedback?
