I'm in late - but one time a chicken attacked me and I hit the thing like a baseball with a 2x4. I've also punched a dog in the head before after being bit.

Dogs are animals. Animals have lived in the wild for how many years? I grew up in southeast Ohio (seems like several on here have) and we never once had our dogs in our house or garage during any weather. They were free to roam all the time. They had a pen they could go to if they wanted. As long as the dogs can get out of the conditions through a roof, wall, or something similar, they'll be fine.

I know animals are resilient and have ways of surviving and keeping warm that humans couldn't. Everyone is different, but I think if I'm going to go to the trouble of owning pets, I'm going to at least provide them better conditions than they'd find in the wild anyways. I could understand keeping them outside (with shelter) in the rain, snow, and heat. But when it gets negative zero like it has several times this year, IMO, it's a dick move to still keep them out.

I deal with animal cruelty constantly. It is a part of my life. From helping with local rescues, to listening to cases that my wife tells me everyday. People like you, who act snobby as fuck, are not who is needed. Calling people rubes because they leave their dog outside is ridiculous. It's about education, not degradation.

Growing up, my parents would try to bring our dogs inside when it was so cold out, and what would they do? Claw the fuck out of the door because they wanted back outside.

Depends on the dog. A Siberian husky will be fine outside just like a wolf will. Dogs live outside all the time in very cold temps.

I lived overseas for a good portion of my life, and dogs lived outside all the time. More so than they do in the states. Hate when people think it's not humane to disallow dogs to live inside their homes.

...provided they have shelter, food, and water. A dog house with food water and some sort of bedding will be enough for most kinds of weather. The important thing is to know you can be prosecuted if you neglect your animals, so use some common sense. If you are dealing with sub-zero temperatures and wend chills, it only makes sense to give your outdoor pets a little extra help...bring them in or even in the garage or barn. There have benn several cases of animal neglect on the news lately... and most involve having an animal tied up and left unattended.

I wanted to add this...but for some reason the edit function is not working....

Be particularly careful during the summer months and periods of extreme heat, also. Don't leave your animal unattended in an enclosed vehicle, and make sure they have access to shade and water.

Yes, you still have to take care of the dog. I wasn't suggesting being a total POS and leaving your dog out there to fend for itself.
