My son was asking about our family history the other day, he asked if anyone in our family had ever been in prison. I have looked into my families genealogy and found some interesting things. My maternal grandmothers family, (Satterfields) got off of a flat boat where Brush Creek meets the Ohio river and have lived in this area since 1802. We have family names and births since then of my moms side of the family.

My fathers side however we could only trace to my grandparents. I joined ancestry.com and found back 3 generations. My maternal great grandfather, Pearl Carman was incarcerated for armed robber in 1927. He was serving time in the Ohio Penitentiary and was 1 of the 322 inmates who died in the prison fire.

Yeah, I think so. My dad's side came over from England in the 17th century and settled in Massachusetts.

Then my great-great-great-great(?) grandfather Rufus and his dad both served for the colonials during the Revolution. As compensation for his service, Rufus was granted some acreage of land to settle in Ohio just south of Mt. Vernon near the crossroads town of Homer. While the homestead doesn't exist anymore, the road that went by the house which bears their and my last name does.

Just found out this summer that Mom's side had two brothers that were killed in consecutive days during Gettysburg. Neat-o

My mom's grandparents came over from Germany. My dad's mom is a direct descendent of the dude Austinburg, Ohio was named after in the early 1800s.

My 6th or 7th great grandpa on my Mom's side was the 5th governor of Ohio. Other than that nothing noteworthy.

I am a descendent of the House of Plantagenet and King Henry III is my 10th great grandfather.

Its nothing special though, millions of people can make the same claim

My great great great grandparents on my mother's side were a founding family in McArthur Ohio (wooo)

My great great grandfather fought for PA, Ohio and Michigan in the civil war.

I also have an ancestor who fought in the revolutionary war. We have been trying to get all the paperwork together for my mom to join Daughters of the Revolution.

Paternal grandparents came over from Italy, maternal great grandparents from Germany. My dad's biggest regret was that his parents (specifically his mother) insisted their children be brought up speaking only English. She felt that if they spoke Italian, they would be looked upon as different and be ostracized. From a selfish standpoint it's too bad, because I would've loved to have been brought up in a bi-lingual household.

Digging through my history right now. On my dad's side, my family history basically stops around 1880. Ancestors came from Italy, but I can't find whether they moved straight to Ohio or had a stint in New York. It seems to me like they just randomly appeared in Fairfield county around 1900.

Mom's side is pretty uninteresting. Only thing I've noticed so far is that my grandpa's dad's dad was well off compared to everyone else. Their home value trumps everyone elses on the census list I was reading. Also, my grandpa and his dad both had the same occupation (install telephones). Having trouble (once again) getting past 1900 or so.

Edit: successfully traced my mom's dad's side of the family back to 1600's. Apparently they've been in the States awhile.

Ancestry is great. I got everyone but my surname back to at least 1600 within like 3 days of starting it

200 years later they have a McDonalds and a stop light

Both of my family sides come from Ireland. On my dad's side, County Sligo. Two brothers came to Chicago in 1870 and then made their way to Columbus while working for the railroad. Mom's family was from Cork and they came to NYC in the 1920s.

Nothing super interesting. I did the free trial on ancestry.com as well. Very fun and informative, but I didn't find out anything noteworthy.

I know my great grandfather came over from Italy. And at some point before them I think some ancestors moved to Europe from Northern Morocco. At some point I would like to check out one of those ancestry sites to see exactly where they came from.

My great great grandpa came to the US during the Irish Famine years and "changed his surname upon passage" according to County records back in Ireland. Usually this was done for "nefarious reasoning" in the notation. So we figure he was probably a drunk Irish criminal of some type. Gotta love the Irish!

My Father, along with his Neice and Nephew, traced our genalogy back to the first that came over from Ireland. A lot of it was done prior to the Internet.

Marvel - 26th Infantry Company D, Tennessee Calvary, Civil War - During his military service, Marvel was captured at Ft. Donelson, TN and exchanged at Vicksburg.
He rejoined his unit, saw action at Murfreesboro where he was wounded in the hip. He saw action from Atlanta to Franklin and was captured at Bentonville, NC and taken to Pt. Lookout until the end of the War (two months later).
