It's not about TE or WR, he doesn't want to be franchised at all, understandably.

I don't really see the big deal about the franchise tag for the players.
The NFL is a series of One Year deals anyway, can understand wanting the security of a couple year deal, but irregardless if you come out and suck/get hurt, they will cut you regardless (Barring a huge signing bonus/cap hit)
At least with the Tag you're getting a high 1 year deal.

If they would retire due to injury, they wouldn't get the money anyway. Pretty sure there are usually injury guarantees in that guaranteed money, probably for the first 2-3 years of the contract, depending on contract length. I know the non guarenteed contracts are huge when the CBA comes around. The $$ isnt guarenteed. Drew Brees has a 5yr/100M contract with 60M guaranteed no matter what, even if he had broken his neck in the first game of the new contract.
