But WHY was it such a big deal to Ned Stark to find him then? (without spoilers if you can, please). The tv show, at least, hinted Robert's bastards were somehow a threat to Joffrery, which is why Ned wanted to find Gendry and why Joffrey had all the bastards killed.

When there are only 10 episodes a year yes id like to see a little action in every ep. I thought last nights episode was pretty good, but I don't really need to see a huge battle to think that, so.
I think it is just to show how nutty Cersei has become, although her actions at the wedding last week indicated that. Also, that Jaime still has some attraction to her.
