Wasn't purgatory created by the Pope as a way to get people to spend money and buy indulgences?
One has to understand the unique position of the Catholic Church in history versus the other Christian denomnations.
After the fall of Rome, and the invading hordes, it was the only organization of western civilization left and it necessarily filled the political vacuum for centuries. Like any other politcal power, laws and rules were made to keep order...and like any other political power, was subject to corruption.
The Church is the only Christian entity that can trace its roots directly back to being founded by Jesus Christ....all other Christian denominations sprang from reformation of the Church. The Church itself continues to self evaluate, sifting thru centuries of rituals determining that which is critical and was 'from God' and that which was man made. Hence the 'waffling' on concepts like purgatory, limbo, etc.

It would be no be no different than saying "the youth favored Obama" "the rich favored Romney" "the blacks overwhelmingly favored Obama". It is disengenuous to believe that statistical breakdowns of demographics aren't looked at and aren't important. I do know Demographics are always looked at and that is a problem. It is usually Liberals who like to classify people into different groups to gain special rights or create an us vs them mindset. Mostly done with good intentions but in reality all they do is create the thing they think they are fighting against. Why are statistical breakdowns of demographics important? Why is it important to know that white males under 30 with a college education who are right handed voted for Obama? It is important so another lobby can be created to push for special things for the young white right handed college graduate then again whichever party caters to that lobby then gets the support of the lobby then the lobby tells its supporters that the X or Y party is the one to vote for. Knowing that blacks voted for Obama does nothing for anyone other than for someone to who doesn't like Obama or his politics to look at Blacks in a negative light because they all must obviously be socialist, welfare loving, government dependents when in reality it is mainly because they are led to believe the Democrat party is the one looking out for their interest when that is not the case at all.

It would be stupid for me to think that the stats were racist and I never said the statement that blacks support Obama was racist or the stats behind it were racist. I said that line of thinking that we have to group people together allows for racism to exist. If everyone was truly looked at as an individual rather than a group, racism would have a hard time existing.

I agree with this, but perhaps not with the intent to which you posted it. The concept of 'seperation from God' being the punishment is not unique to any religion or denomination, and it is NOT absent from the Catholic Church. Frankly, I think you would find few catholic scholars that believe differently, or that think that 'hell' is an actual fiery pit. Oneness with God, or oneness with the universe seems to be pretty common theme not only among Christians but other mainstream religions others as well. Unfortunately, people seize upon the inconsistencies of ritual, or of a concept (like hell) told to a less sophisticated people to help them understand the deeper concepts. An unsophisticated, uneducated 5th century farmer can wrap his head around the torture of a fiery pit....oneness with god? ehhh not so much. It is not important whether heaven or hell be actual places, but to understand the concept of the ultimate 'reward is being with God, and that it is torture(like being in a fiery pit) to be seperated from him. Similarly, you'll hear people talk that 'you'll never attain salvation except thru Jesus and that you must accept him as your saviour'....again, it is not important that we take 'Him" literally, but that you accept what he was telling us,... his truth his light, his way his life. Sadly, too many get hung up on the literal and miss the symbolic.
