Because somebody has to be the scapegoat.

Withers coaches the worst unit on the field and calls the coverages for the defense. He is the one in the press box calling down plays. He is the very first that needs to go.

May as well just draw a defensive coaches name out of a hat then.

Was at the game and couldn't believe how little the team seemed to have worked on from the Michigan game. All an offense needs to do is throw to the corners on an out route and you burn this secondary. It was quite pathetic. I, with novice football knowledge, could tell what plays MSU was going to run and OSU still couldn't stop them.

I wanted to believe that the Michigan game was an anomaly, that ESPN and all the haters and sports "journalists" were wrong. Sadly, I can't do that. Not to take anything away from MSU. They were clearly the better team last night. Ohio State better get it together or Clemson is going to rock them in the Orange Bowl.

Did Fickell just all of a sudden become a bad defensive coordinator? What about all the time he was with Tress/Heacock as the co-def. coordinator when our defense was just flat solid?
Withers is the other Def. Coordinator that no one mentions. Why? No one knows of him and everyone thinks Meyer walks on water, and he brought in Withers. From what I know, and heard...Fickell runs the defensive line and LB. Withers is in charge of the DB's and pass defense. Who calls the defense on game day is beyond me.

Bottom line is that everyone on the defensive side of the football needs to be held accountable. We'll see how things shake out. All I know is this defense did not improve. I expected some bumps early as they are/were pretty young up front. But also expected them to show improvement. Injuries did in fact hurt this team as wel. LB's and DB's often injured.

I would love to see Heacock back!

CB...we did see (or thought we did) some improvement midway thru the season but I think now those teams at midpoint were just god awful. Solid D- grade on the season Meyer & co. and it's time to clean house.

I like the rushing yards on offense, but we do need to work on this thing called "the forward pass"!

I don't know if its the play calling or the tackling but the defense is awful. We definitely need a new defensive coordinator.

Also, incredible how a 12-1 season is considered a failure for Ohio State. This is why we are the best; Michigan looks forward to their Outhouse Bowl game while Ohio State is crying about a BCS bowl.

It seems to me that the DB's give up on receivers and assume run if the play takes longer than 4-5 seconds. This leads to WIDE OPEN receivers.

I think it's both coaching and poor players.

It's both, but without the latter, schemes are relatively unimportant.

I think it's safe to say: Fick is a great Buckeye, but a putrid coach. Now ... rather than harp on this, who would be a prime candidate to be OSU's 2014 defensive coordinator?

* Pat Narduzzi (DC, MSU) ... no way he leaves for anything other than a head coach spot, but worth mentioning.
* Justin Wilcox (DC, Washington) ... any chance to steal him? Probably not now that Peterson is heading there as head coach.
* Mike Elko (DC, Bowling Green) ... a local option, while I never watched a BG game this year I hear their D was quite physical and attacking.
* Jim Heacock ... come back???

Thoughts?

Don't be surprised to see Withers retained and Fickell gone. And as many on here have already noted, that may or may not be the right answer or a fair assessment of the problem. But I doubt Meyer ever really wanted Luke anyway, thus the "co-coordinator" titles.

I kinda see it this way too.

Withers is an Urban guy, Fick is not(no matter how much Urban tries to hide it).

Also, throw me into te group that would take Heacock back.

He could be gone by his own choice. From what I know, he did in fact interview for the Florida Atlantic job.

Fickell should just do himself as favor and leave on his own.

I think Meyer made a huge mistake by not keeping Taver Johnson and attempting to keep Haynes as the Co-DC and safeties coach.

They may be somewhat better with different coaches, but the bottom line is that the talent is meedy oaker for a program of this level at a number of positions.

I do agree that is the bigger issue. I posted the attrition list earlier. So many transfers and injuries just decimated any depth that OSU would have had.

Really? Most of the Dline are all blue chip recruits. LB...Shazier an All American. Grant was rated as the #1 LB in country coming out of HS. DB's...Roby an All American, Barnett a semi finalist for Thorpe award.
Thats enough to field a pretty decent defense. Byant loss was huge. But come on. Its not a lack of talent. Most of the big plays OSU gave up, guys were just flat lost out on the field. WR running wide open. So I don't buy the lack of talent at all. Yes, a lack of depth in certain area's. No question. But still no excuse to give up what this defense gave up these past two games.

?

Isn't our entire line like 5* recruits? Yeah the secondary has been bad but its not like they are a bunch of 3*s lol.

Meaningless. "Pitt" Brown was a 5*, and coaching isn't the reason he isn't playing like one. The whole 5* 4* stuff is a joke.
