Basically an atheistic group wanted to volunteer and help out with a soup kitchen, they said no.

The group sets up shop across the street and gives out food and other items such as clothing to the needy anyways. The soup kitchen executive director through some quotes ends up looking like an idiot.

Their group. Their rules. People can call them idiots, and people calling the people calling them idiots, idiots...have just as strong of an argument. I'm not Catholic, I don't intend on going to a Catholic charity and bitch that they don't want me around.

The atheist group antagonized the thing...just because you attack assholes doesn't mean you're not an asshole yourself.

Is it that difficult in life to be normal and not be a jerk to others, and enjoy the right to freedom of association with people with similar viewpoints? Apparently in 2013 America it is.

I agree that getting press attention attracts this sort of thing, but the cynic in me thinks that the US has just become dumber in the last decade.

Yes, their group, their rules. That's fine. That line of thinking is somewhat stomach-able, but when it comes to helping others, I think the focus should be on helping others and not necessarily the beliefs or lack there of beliefs of those helping. But to accuse the atheist group of being with the devil is just asinine. This is a group of people who are trying to help the needy. In what respect is that the devil's work? When it comes to doing good deeds for our fellow humans, that's the most important thing (which is the point of the group).

Damn those atheists for handing out over 300 packages filled with food, toothpaste, socks, ponchos at a location where those who need such items congregate to get meals. Did you ever stop to think that maybe they just wanted to help people and it was most convenient to hand out those packages in an area where those people who need this help are concentrated?

I agree, but so freaking what? They are asinine. So why does the atheist group want to work with them? Because they are bigger assholes and want to antagonize them. In my experience the best way with dealing with jerks is to let them just be jerks.

But to the point of the thread, there should be no expectation that anyone should be able to join a charitable program just because they like the charity and not abide by the charity's rules....I love dogs but I can't just go up to the Dogs Trust booth at the local fair and expect them to let me behind their booth on a whim. It is their group and they have a process.

This was a total counterintuitive thread. The atheists were the bigger assholes for expecting a private group to accommodate them. Again, the Constitution has been trampled often recently, but some of us still stand by it.

Both groups were idiots. The atheists wanted to cause a scene and the Catholics should have allowed any volunteers and definitely shouldn't have said they were from the devil.

So you would be OK with any group that hands out food on a conditional basis? The atheists offered to help. This should help advance their cause. Hell, they might even convert a few non believers while they were helping with Christ's work.

As I referenced in my previous post, I'd bet the atheist group wants to work with the kitchen as it has an established location. It sounds like this group had collected and bought goods to distribute but didn't have an easy dispersal mechanism and was trying to work with other organizations to help with the distribution. And it also sounds like this atheist group works with other charities in that manner in an effort to help people.

Also, I don't see how this is a Constitutional issue? The government isn't involved here (well beyond tax issues). This is about humanitarianism and a supposedly humanitarian organization showing a complete lack thereof. A group that espouses to be benevolent, inclusive, forgiving, loving, and welcoming is acting in a manner contrary to those ideals towards people who are acting in such a manner.

This is the closed mindedness that hurts the image of organized religion.

I'm not against organized religion as it can do good such as helping others or giving people hope. But it can also be used to create unnecessary divisions that hurt humanity.

Absolutely. And in that scenario it's completely unnecessary to make a media incident out of this. If that was their goal, they could have just gone about doing it. But clearly they had a political motive.

Funny...when I've voluntarily donated clothing or canned goods I've NEVER been questioned as to my religious beliefs or motives.

A wise person would assume these "donations" were not without strings attached.

What was their political motive? To help the needy in the most efficient manner possible? DAMN THEM! DAMN THEM TO HELL!!!!!

As indicated in the article, this group already works with other charities in other locations. Maybe, just maybe this charity is just trying to help people and network with organizations to be more efficient.

LMAO....Believe what you want. They could have simply given the goods to that Church no strings attached and been done with it. Somehow this became an article. If you can't see a political motive there I can't help you.

It became an issue because a group claiming to do humanitarian work was acting in a manner that would limit or impede the overall effectiveness that a combined effort could have achieved.

This wasn't news when this group reached out to other organizations and they worked together in a way to further humanitarian goals. But this one Christian based soup kitchen decided to not only decline but put out a statement that the devil was with them.

I disagree with your assessment of who made this an issue.

Yes because I'm not a complete retard that thinks the Constitution is a piece of garbage. We have freedom of association. I don't want to send this to the politics board but Jesus, any charity can make the decision on who they want or don't want to associate with. It doesn't matter if it feeding homeless, helping dogs, or working with young people.
