The Dolans are pretty much getting panned in the media....and one could hear the irritation in Tito's voice as he spoke about it. Even Antonetti seemed uncomfortable running out the company line. I get the feeling that this came about because Dolan would not expand the budget enough to get the deal done.
Pure speculation on my part, but I would bet Tito had a lot to do with Masterson's hometown discount....not demanding Homer Bailey money...and probably stuck his neck out a bit to get Masty to come down in years. From a baseball perspective, Antonetti is going to want Masterson as he is the best pitcher on the staff, and you can't compete in post season without an ace....and it's not like this is a $100 million /6+year deal. This has ownership written all over it.
I am positive Tito had alot to do with it. Masterson, in the prime of his career, would not be offering to take a 3 year deal if Manny Acta were still the manager.
When you see the deals pitchers are signing, the fact he is willing to do a short deal at his age frankly is amazing to me. In a normal situation he would be looking to cash out for his prime years, and instead he is throwing the organization a relative bone.
Tito is probably pissed because he knows this is going to be a distraction this year now and hover over the team all year. If Masterson pitches like an ace, then he becomes impossible to sign and talk of moving him at the deadline has to come up rather than losing him for nothing.
This one is going to be really hard for the Dolan's to spin as anything but cheapness. When the team's best pitcher offers to take a deal that is literally half of what his best comp (Bailey) is set to earn, you have a real problem when that is deemed far too expensive still.
The Dolan's want him to take a deal like Matt Garza signed, but Masterson is a better pitcher. $11-12 million doesn't buy you much as far as starting pitching quality anymore, and the Dolan's just refuse to realize that.
I just hate that the situation is inevitably going to throw a wet blanket on this season that should be building towards a playoff push.
All the while the Dolan's will be throwing a pity party for themselves that fans aren't coming to the ballpark not realizing that shit like this makes people not want to give them their money.
