Based on another convo in another thread, bad losses (Stanford) don't mean much. ;)

1 bad loss can be overcome by many top 30 or 10 wins. Obviously multiple ones cannot. MSU doesn't have those wins.

Bad losses might not mean much when you have some quality wins, MSU doesn't have any quality wins.

As I read down through this thread I kind of chuckle at the on-going debate about the fairness (or lack thereof) in the current BCS selection process. Next year the new 4 team playoff should be a step in the right direction with regard to giving the top teams an opportunity to settle the debate on the field.

I still think even a 4-team playoff will create just as much debate as the current system. I'm hoping, however, that the 4-team playoff will serve to demonstrate the need to expand the playoff system.

This has been argued ad nauseam but it's still fun to discuss how we'd personally like to see an 8-team (or more) playoff system develop. I think an 8-team playoff would be sufficient.

I'd like to see major CFB take some of the subjectivity of the ranking system out of the equation by issuing automatic bids from the "power" conferences.

Five auto-bids would go to the eventual conference champions out of the SEC, B1G, Big 12, PAC 12, and ACC.

The AAC should be re-classified a mid-major conference.

Next an auto-bid would go to the highest ranked "power" independent (Notre Dame, Navy, BYU, etc.) provided those independents are ranked in the top 15 of the BCS rankings.

Likewise one auto-bid would go to the highest ranked mid-major team in the BCS rankings provided that team is also ranked in the top 15. This year, for example, that appears to be Northern Illinois.

If all of the above holds true there would be one at-large bid available. This would go to the highest ranked team that is not a conference champion out of the "power" conferences.

If a there are no power independents or mid-major teams ranked in the BCS top 15, then those slots would go to the next highest ranked teams out of the power conferences.

Once the teams are selected then the playoff would be seeded by BCS rankings.

Yeah, yeah go ahead and call me a dumbass but it's still fun to think about this stuff! : thumbup:

I see no reason independents should have their own classification for an auto bid. I say lump them in with the "mid-major" teams for an autobid. 6 Autobids (5 conference, 1 everyone else) and two at-large if you're doing an 8 team.

But I really think 4 teams is enough for now. I would like to see how it plays out for the next 5-10 years though.

Make the independents join a conference if they want an auto bid. And no special treatment to ANY team. That includes you, broke ass Notre Dame.

I think you do 5 auto-bids from the BCS conferences, 1 auto-bid to the highest ranked mid major conference champion, and 2 wildcards go to the next 2 highest in the polls. Seeds are based on the coaches poll rankings.

I 100% agree with this. They shouldn't be rewarded for not being in a conference. There aren't enough good ones to make it work.

This sounds reasonable.

I have always said that 8 would be great, but the power conferences must have at least 12 schools and play a championship game, that way it is actually a 10-11 school playoff (still 2-3 at large avaliable for the best non conference champs). Yes the AAC (aka CUSA ten years ago) should be mid-major. I agree that if the best conference champion mid-major (include independents) is top 15, they get an auto-bid. That leaves either two or three at large.

This is good, minus the coaches poll.

I would just make seeding by BCS rank.

Great game and great win today for Akron over Toledo. Really like the direction the program is going. Bowden should have the Zips bowling next season. Not bad after coming off 3 straight 1-11 seasons.

Pelini is easily one of the most unlikeable coaches. Thank God the Buckeyes never took a look at him after the Tat 5 situation.

SJSU leads Fresno 42-41 at half. Combined 12 passing TDs in the first half, wow

Fresno shit the bed against a below and now .500 SJSU team. No need for NIU to worry about getting jumped, but I didn't think it was going to happen anyways with the MAC-C against BG. Looks like another year with NIU in the BCS. Great for the conference.
