Savings for both children. $600ish per year, since they were born.
Better hope your kids go to Marietta as ~$600 a yr is about $10,600 by the time they're ready for college. Avg college IN State tuition is $9k PER year and significantly more if you go elsewhere.
The cost for one year of tuition and fees varies widely among colleges. According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2012–2013 school year was $29,056 at private colleges, $8,655 for state residents at public colleges, and $21,706 for out-of-state residents attending public universities.

Marietta is a private college and tuition is currently 31k a year. Nice fail, and hope this helps.

lol always nice to get a shot in on marietta. If it is 31k as pick6 says, then what a waste of money.

Will you buy your wife an updated iPhone?

Seriously though reps (actually not giving them to you because gfy) for putting money aside for your childrens' future education. My life was made much easier post graduation, because I did not have to pay off one cent of a loan.

Many of the D3 private schools in Ohio are very costly and around that price.

I didn't have a loan to pay either and am thankful as the girl I carpool with I believe is still paying on hers 13 years later and we went to the same damn school.

Yeah I would have liked my parents to put aside money for my education, but I can see why they never really thought of it, as I was the first in my family to go to a 4 year university. I like to think that paying for college on my own benefited me in some way. I'd say I live below my means for the most part. Most money of my extra spending is on alcohol haha. I plan to pay off my ~50k in debt in 5 years.

D3 is irrelevant. Most private schools are outrageous. I can't fathom why anyone would attend one over a public counterpart.

I know everyone says this, but if I could redo it I'd probably just go to community college for two years and then transfer somewhere else.

It would have helped me in three ways:

1) I wouldn't have had to take out loans
2) I could've sooner realized that college is a huge scam
3) I could've entered the job market earlier

How could going to a community college for two years and then transferring somewhere else help you enter the job market earlier? And what would you do after realizing college is a scam?

FWIW- I'd recommend going to community college for two years if you know ahead of time that you plan to transfer to a 4 year. I did it after one year, but it was sort of unplanned so I didnt get the most classes that I could out of it.

Yeah....but all of them were also D3 which also means they didn't give athletic scholarships.

I know....I went to Wilmington College (private/D3) to play baseball and had to go to an essay writing contest there about 2 months before classes started. There were about 20 of us in a room "competing" for $3500 grants (one year was only $12,000 in 1992...but expensive then).....I'm pretty damn sure everyone in that room was awarded the $3500 and they were all athletes.

I will encourage my kids (as well as my students) to attend a 2-year school, to obtain an associates degree first. If they hate college, they have a degree. If they want to pursue, they can. But they just got their Gen-Ed's out of the way, for probably less than 1/3 of the cost. I agree 100% with dlazz, that college is a scam. College is only necessary for specialized degrees. Hell, I'd encourage any business student to go work in the business world before ever even thinking about college.

^^ Your advice is flawed. You dont get a degree in 2 years while taking only gen ed classes preparing to pursue a 4 yr degree.

Also, good luck getting any business job worth anything with absolutely no experience/college.

I dont know, do I? An associate's is worthless. And if they are getting an associates, they will be maybe getting a half of their gen-eds out of the way. Which will make them have to go to school an extra year if they decide to go to a 4 years school, since they will be behind.

If you're goal is to just get an associates, dont even bother.
