Moneyball was a great film, ranking right up there with A Few Good Men and The Social Network as one of Aaron Sorkin's best works and certainly one of the best films of the last decade. As such, Pitt's performance, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, deserves high acclaim. It was a tremendous performance by Pitt.
As for Christian Bale, while he's great in almost anything he does, I think his magnum opus is American Psycho. He took a role that in the hands of almost any other actor would have reduced the film to little more than a second-rate slasher movie and elevated it into one of the all-time great protagonists in an underrated American masterpiece. Among the handful of elite actors who possibly could have achieved that feat in such an offbeat role, Leonardo DiCaprio, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp were all considered for the part before it ultimately was cast to Bale. All would have been fantastic choices, but it's hard to envision any of them producing as chillingly dark, empty and yet utterly mesmerizing a character as Bale.
