Yeah, slumps aren't cool, but this has been a "great pitching, no offense" slump, which is far less worrisome than one where the pitching sucks, since this team seems built more on outpitching other teams than putting up a lot of runs. Also helps that of the other two teams that matter in the division, Cincy's struggling about as badly and St. Louis is just playing decent, but not great.

Monday's loss bothered me more than last night's, just because the team got plenty of hits Monday, but just couldn't move people across the plate. Last night, except for Pedro's shot, the offense was all-but-invisible.

Team took 2/3 from the Mets to break a streak where they lost three straight series, I think. Only .5 behind the Cards going into the all-star break despite that slump, though.

Or actually either tied or one game back. Cards are prime-time tonight, I just saw. It always hurts to say good things about the Cubs, but yeah, go win tonight you worthless fucks!!!

Well, here we go with the second half of the season. May it be a memorable summer and fall for Bucco fans!

(Let's pause at this time for a moment of silent prayer that it's not like the last two second halfs.)

So far, McCutchen is 2-2 with 2 2-run homers against Dan "Hai Guyz, remember back in the day when I was good?" Haren. McCutchen is good at baseball.

Don't think anyone knows yet. I've heard that he called it a "minor setback", but that could mean anything from missing a week or so to a month. Forearm tightness is one of those things that could mean a lot of things, especially since that seems to be Pittsburgh's go-to term for anything in the forearm or elbow.

Short-term, it won't hurt a lot, as Melancon can easily step into the closer role and I'd guess Watson will do a lot of the set-up work with Wilson there to help out if needed, but the longer he's gone, the more taxed the 'pen will be depth-wise.

Potential good news on the Grilli front (I mean, I didn't know how many people cared until today!)!

Dejan Kovacevic ‏@Dejan_Kovacevic 3m I am told Jason Grilli did NOT feel any type of pop at any point. General soreness all inning that peaked with last pitch. Excellent news.

Which hopefully means that with a week or two rest, things are back to normal.

In roster-related moves

1. Grilli on 15-day DL, Melancon moves into closer role.

2. Vic Black called up to take his place. One of their better AAA prospects. A bit surprised he got the call over Reid or Welker, who'd both been up previously, but with Black either being part of the future bullpen or a possible trade chip they might want to showcase a bit, I'm glad to see him. Don't know why he wasn't used yesterday, though. 5-1 lead in the 9th is the perfect chance to let him get his feet wet.

3. Neil Walker off the DL.

4. Brandon Inge DFA'd. Apparently "leadership" and "chemistry" don't make up for "can't fucking hit the ball to save his life".

Liriano outdueled Strasberg last night for the team's 4th straight win. Necessary to keep up with the Cards, who are playing the Phils, who are tanking as bad as the Nats right now.

Be nice to get the sweep today. Ought to be a tough one, as they're going against Gio with Burnett, who's been struggling at going deep into games this year. And with not giving up at least a couple runs per outing recently.
