On Monday, the league gave the OK for more night games and even said they wouldn’t object to playing under the lights in November. Delany told ESPN.com that Ohio State, Penn State and Nebraska were the schools that showed the most interest in primetime matchups.
When the infamous Leaders and Legends Divisions were originally announced, not only were the names mocked, so was the makeup. The Big Ten used competitive balance as the No. 1 factor in determining which teams would be in which division.
That theory has been retired. A more traditional East-West alignment is likely to be used once the conference gains Maryland and Rutgers, pushing it to 14 teams. There are eight schools in the Eastern time zone and six in the Central time zone, so one eastern school must crossover.
But one thing is almost certain, Ohio State and Michigan will be in the same division.

I'd be surprised if Michigan didn't have some interest in the night games. They spent a lot of money to put lights in, and Dave Brandon like cash and marketing.

I can't imagine the misery of sitting and watching a night game in Ann Arbor mid-November. Columbus would be bad enough!

Yeah, probably not in November. Though I'm sure it would be a sell out.

Oh yeah, there's no doubt it would sell out.


Meyer has been a godsend for the B1G, and I would say that if he weren't our coach. He's going to change the culture, and challenge every other school and coach to get with it. Seems like Hoke is the only one on board as of now.

Honestly, I think many of the B1G schools just can't. Indiana, Purdue, Minny, etc, just are never going to recruit close to the level of OSU and Michigan. They don't have the funds and resources, and they don't have the funds to hire the top end coaches.

He can challenge all he wants; I just don't see what is going to change.

I'm interested to see what Hazell does at Purdue. Yea, Indiana and Minny are going to be bottom dwellers, but the likes of Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State(obvious hold backs right now), Illinois, and MSU should be recruiting much better than they are. Hell, if NW can have success being heavily restricted by academic standards, these other schools should be able to as well.

They don't need to be on OSU/mich level but they need to be better overall which is the point. Let's be honest, they're horrid. It wouldn't take much to prove they have a pulse.

So do think they just aren't trying? I don't buy that at all. Seems if they could do better they would be already.

What do they do with all the money they get from the B1G? I get why that makes it hard to compete against the OSU's and the Michigan's but they should be able to compete with schools outside the conference if they chose to. I'm not saying they are, but I'm asking are they content to take a big fat B1G paycheck and go on to do other (maybe academic) things?

Complacency /= "trying". Look what Pat Fitzgerald has done at NW with a passion for the school and the game in general. He's a graduate of NW but his approach isn't unique or ground breaking in any way. I've not checked and could be wrong but I doubt he's one of the higher paid caoches in the country and he does quite well for what little talent he receives. So could Purdue, Minny, Iowa et al do better? I think so.

Fitz is barely above .500 at NW. Never finished higher than 4th in the league.

...and he just won a bowl game and a near miss the year before. The point is he has brought a permanent basement dweller to the brink of relevancy with much less than other members of the B1G have at their disposal. Surely that point isn't brushing your hair back or am I giving you too much credit?

They had a good year last year. The year before that you mentioned they finished 6-7. He'd done ok I guess, but it's very average for the B1G.

My point is, if that is the bar you are setting, I think it's already been met. I don't think anything will change with B1G recruiting. Especially now with Maryland and Rutgers on board. They don't exactly pull in stellar football classes.

It's going to be terrible for years to come then. Within' a couple years there will be so much distance between OSU/UM and the rest of the schools, the B1G will be dead on a national level.

Ok...it's seems pretty clear that you're going to argue the point of complacency, not because you don't think there's room for improvement but from where the idea is coming from.

When hasn't it been that way? Every year there is a pretender that tries to challenge, but honestly, it's always been OSU, Michigan and sometimes Penn State. Adding Nebraska should help long term.

The B1G obviously doesn't care since they added 2 more teams that will be bottom feeders in the B1G.

Northwestern certainly is a level below the top of the B1G, but not bad in the last 5 years

2012 - 10-3 Beat Miss St in bowl game
2011 - 6 -7 lost to Texas A&M in bowl game
2010 - 7-6 lost to Texas Tech in bowl game
2009 - 8-5 lost to Auburn in bowl game
2008 - 9-4 lost to Missouri in bowl game

Depends on how you look at it. In that list, I see at team that got worse for 4 years and then had an above average year. Will they maintain that above average year? Time will tell, but time also tells us probably not.

Yes. Wisconsin and MSU are the two teams that CAN and SHOULD improve their recruiting. MSU's class this year after back-to-back 11 win seasons is inexcusable. They DO have the money and resources, and DO have the coach (at least in name).

Honestly, this is how I see it:

Should be able to recruit at a high level and compete year-in and year-out:
OSU
Michigan
Wisconsin
Penn State (not considering sanctions)
Nebraska

The rest: won't. They will have a good year now and again and even challenge for B1G championship. But nothing is going to change.
