I still can't believe Kansas lost to TCU last night, prompting Self to call it the worst game since Naismith played a Wichita YMCA team. Kansas ranked top 5 and TCU with an RPI in the 220s.

Can anyone think of a bigger upset in college basketball?

I mean, last night was bad. But Chaminade in 1982 was a school with 800 students. Total. They were NAIA for crying out loud.

#1 Virginia had Ralph Sampson and Rick Carlisle, had beaten Georgetown (w/ Patrick Ewing) and Houston (from the Phi Slama Jama days) already that year.

I'd draw a parallel to something else that has happened in college sports, but there can be no parallel drawn. It's in a class of its own.

Unless something crazy happens like a d 3 school beating a d 1, Chaminade over Virginia will be the biggest upset for all time.

1985 Title game was pretty big upset (Villanova over Georgetown), but over all biggest would be as mentioned above.

Appalachian State over Michigan in Ann Arbor? The Wolverines were top five and on the cover of Sports Illustrated to start the year.

Maybe if Appalachian State was a d2 or d3 school. Didn't Appy St go on to win the FCS title that year?

I honestly don't remember. Just thought I would throw that out there. I do remember there being (I believe) a handful of future NFL players on that team. So Appalachian State certainly wasn't entirely devoid of elite talent. Still, in Ann Arbor, it's probably the greatest upset in modern day college football.

Yes they did go on to win the FCS title. They finished the season 13-2.

Not even close. It was a conference game. The spread was TCU +16.5. Big upset, but not close to greatest ever.

For instance, Norfolk State was a 21-point underdog last year against Missouri.

Yes they did and that year was their third straight D1AA title(Where they beat Delaware QB'd by Joe Flacco).

There is a lot more disparity in football than basketball. Appy State-UM upset was huge! A mid major or two makes a run basically every year in the tourney. Chaminade beat Texas this year, and they are D2. You never hear of D1-AA beating a top 5 team.

Not as big as the TCU or Chaminade upsets, but #11 seed VCU beating #1 seed Kansas in 2011 was pretty big as well, especially with a Final Four berth on the line.

I'd argue Chaminade beating a meedy-oaker Texas team this season is a bigger upset.

No not really. That was a really good VCU team, and Josh Selby ruined that '11 KU team. That team overachieved big time. For Christs sake they had 2 white boys (Tyrel Reed and Brady Morningstar) in their starting lineup.
