Orrville is not the town it was in the 80's when you had a couple teams that could compete with any team, any size, in the state. Orrville was a vibrant active town then that totally revolved around sports. Those days are gone forever. You are now only a D5 school in a average D5 town. You are in a conference where some schools have classes with more boys than you have in 9th thru 12th. The only D5 teams in Ohio football history who can compete on a regular basis in a league with teams 2 and 3 divisions larger are parochial schools who pull high level athletes.
SPOT ON!
Struthers Fan;1524864 wrote:I think you nailed it perfectly. Definitely not the same team or town that I remember coming to Struthers for a playoff game in 1987.
I think all sports at Orrville have taken a hit the past decade or so.
Sometimes you have to make a decision like my alma mater did that wasn't popular at the time. You have to forego long time rivals that are double your size or more now and get into a league that fits your current enrollment.
That difficult change has resulted in more competitive options for our program. Maybe worth a look for Orrville.
Again, SPOT ON

Yep
rrfan;1524943 wrote:Guys you can not just get into a different conference because you want to. Do you honestly think the PAC would look to add Orrville who on a down year beat the PAC Champion? Come on guys. There is no way I want to see a independent schedule like RR1 posted. This is what you have. Suck it up and win 6 games next year and go to the playoffs. That is what it is all about. That was on the table this year. One play away from WH and who knows what happens then. These kids and coaches improved a lot since last year and most was in the attitude! They expected to win this year.
Triway win was a fluke...c'mon.
gowoo;1524959 wrote:Jaco - On paper I agree with you but I believe this game could go either way. Riders will be up for this game on their home turf.
Its a stupid rival...almost as dumb as calling Triway a rival. Woo SHOULD win, but the debate club and...ummm potato. Woo team is underachievers and Orr is out of their league.
rrfan;1524974 wrote:If you are not up for this game you are not breathing! Lets go Riders!
Bring in the O2
gowoo;1524985 wrote:Still would rather have the game on Friday night. Need to move off this Saturday thing.
Great rivalry? Mass/McK should play on Tuesdays.
RedRider1;1525020 wrote:Bingo. I said this last year but it was called "excuse making." Town has dramatically. Gone are the blue collar job & families that worked at Westinghouse, QC, Koppers & Volvo. Kids are graduating high school & leaving for college & not retuning. Why? Because there aren't the opportunities there used to be. Think that doesn't have an impact on the makeup of kids in the schools??
Those names we've seen for decades..Winters, Reusser, DeHart, Tipton, Durden, Robinson, Steiner, Mosley, Bowman, Stoudmire, Hamsher...where have they all gone?
Are we finally ready to admit that the makeup & demographics of this town have changed and that it's impacting our athletic teams?
yes. admit it. Get in a league your size. WCAL should welcome you and Triway. Be done with Rittman (irrelevant) and Hillsdale (Ashland County) Maybe the triple supe can help this...nahhhh
RedRider1;1525024 wrote:Very interesting insight. I won't disagree with you that we've dropped off since those amazing runs in the 80s and 90s..but since the 2009-10 school year, we've gone to a final 4 in football, boys basketball, girls basketball & volleyball.
Not bad for being "down" but I get what you're saying.
You do bring up a good point..say we get into a conference (like say the Portage Trail Conference...hmmm)...we may have to look at not playing Wooster in week 10 (or at all) to be able to fit into a league schedule. That would be wildly unpopular but it might be a choice we have to make.
80's -90's great! a few gig runs since...yep, good stuff, but not your grandpa/dad's Riders. Things have changed.
jaco;1525074 wrote:Agreed. It was cool for the 100th anniversary, but a 3-6 team and a 4-5 team rescheduling to a Saturday night is a bit odd. Screws up the players' routines, too.
At schedule time, AD's arent plamming egg laying.
rrfan;1525112 wrote:I have been saying this for years. Maybe soon an AD will listen! Probably not!!
Maybe...
Red Rider Nation;1525191 wrote:So which is it BINGO from the post before or we have gone to final fours in the last few years in several sports? So let's recap??? The town and all the jobs are gone so we can't compete anymore or is it we can compete because we have gone to Final 4's in several sports??? Hmm and you wonder by people say you contradict yourself homer!
We can all continue with all the excuses we want about being average in an average town but I will give you NORWAYNE! Nothing attractive about that own an I swear that football stadium is falling apart and they just win. How much D1 talent??? I am sure you will have a good comeback i cant wait to hear it!
Just STFU...YOU ARE A RETARD
RedRider1;1525205 wrote:And that run ends after this year. Three good years in 5 decades and that's the example you use? Delusional is right. That program has been around 50 years and doesn't have 200 wins as a program. That's not even 4 wins per season on average. But they're the gold standard??
Keep stroking Harbour though. He came from Northwest didn't he??...must be a friend of yours.
lol 65 years of losing, and a sub .500 career record is erased by a few good seasons? Waynedale is THE winningest team in the league while smithville has the most playoff runs.
Red Rider Nation;1525217 wrote:I wouldn't know Know Joe Harbour from Homer Simpson! They are the gold standard in Wayne County sounds like you are having a hard time dealing with someone winning with the same talent as Orrville!
They are a 4 year dynasty headed back to the middle/basement.
iced earth;1525220 wrote:Norwayne plays schools their own size. Orrville should also. That's all anybody is trying to say.
Coldwater has a great program....they play schools around their same size.
Kirtland has been good the last few years....they play schools around their same size.
Mogadore has a great program....they play schools around the same size.
If Orrville stays in a league with mostly D2 schools, they will lose a lot more games than they will win. As would all the schools I mentioned above.
Just can't dumb it down any more than that.
You REALLY have to dumb it down more for some.
RedRider1;1525228 wrote:Get outta here with all that logic...has no place here.
I imagine we'd have much better than a 5-14 record over the last 2 years if we were playing a PAC or WCAL heavy schedule. Probably about exactly the opposite.
Maybe..maybe not. But you would be better that 5-14.
