Alex Smith also had the lowest percentage of passes in the entire NFL that traveled 15 yards or further, so you have to take his stats with a grain of salt. Literally, he is last in the NFL in that stat and Kaepernick is first I believe. Tells you all you need to know about what the coaches thought about Alex Smith, but also the added threat that Kaep is running the ball keeps the defense up.

I was at the first Bengals game so maybe that's why I have a higher opinion on Weeden than most. He had a very good game throwing downfield against them, and seemed to me from watching bits and pieces of other games that when he was allowed to wing it downfield he actually looked solid. Second half against the Ravens game in Baltimore was another time to me where he looked good.

I agree, when patty fuckhead took the diapers off and let him play to his ability he performed well. Biggest issue was play calling IMO.

Play calling and he struggled in the 3-5-7 step drop. Put him in the shot gun and you'll see a big improvement.

Shurmur was too stubborn to adjust his offense to Weeden's strengths.

As for Weeden? He might not be our QB. Sounds to me like it's going to be a truly open camp (ala Seattle Seahawks) between Weeden, McCoy, and a draft pick or FA (here's to hoping it's not a FA).

If Weeden performs well enough to earn the starting nod (which he will, IMO), then I'm fine with having to deal with him for another year because of the optimism him + downfield passing plan brings.

I think that sounds like an accurate assessment. I don't think Weeden will ever be a top 10 QB, but if they try to have an offense with a lot of downfield throwing I think Weeden can be solid to good, and flirt with 25-30 TDs. Good times are ahead in Cleveland IMO.

Weeden has a great arm....but piss poor pocket presence and poor decisions over and over are his downfall. Shitty draft for qbs this year, so I am content with going another route

They didn't draft Weeden just for the sake of grabbing a QB when he was an upgrade over McCoy.

So Weeden wasn't a marginal upgrade over McCoy? Both had 14 td's, Weeden had 6 more interceptions, same completion percentage. McCoy had a 74 QB rating, Weeden had a 72 QB rating. Weeden threw for more yards, but it didn't result in more TD passes, and the extra picks offset that. In fact, it could be considered a marginal downgrade.

Weeden was not a fucking upgrade. At least not last year. And by the time he potentially becomes an upgrade, he'll be 48 years old.

My problem with Weeds is that he's immobile. The league is evolving and unless you're amazingly good at picking apart defenses (see HOF QBs Manning/Brady/Brees...Rodgers), if you can't run you're fucked. Weeden can't run, and he's average at best at making decisions and getting the ball where it needs to be.

Yeah, he was. Weeden brought a different dynamic/threat that McCoy could never bring....the ability to throw the ball vertically. He may have sucked, at times, but at least teams had to gameplan for the threat of a vertical attack.

People got spoiled with the rookie seasons of RGIII & Russell Wilson. Those guys are exceptions, not the norm, as far as rookie QB stats go. Weeden's stats, although far from great, were not all that abnormal for a rookie. He just gets shit on because he's 29 years old and people expected him, at that age, to step in and be Peyton Manning as a rookie.

Unfortunately, as was mentioned by COA, Shurmur was a big reason for the QB issues. I used to think McCoy was an absolutely shitastic QB but I wonder what both he & Weeden will look like in Chud's offense (should McCoy still be here). I'd bet the farm that with the likely elimination of these short slant patterns that both McCoy & Weeden's batted down passes decrease significantly.

Let Weeden play in an offense that's more suited to his strengths for another year and if he sucks, next. Grabbing an Alex Smith is just a stopgap for when the next QB comes along. Why waste the money?
