NEWTOWN, Conn. — Some children were among those killed in a shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, The Hartford Courant reported.
The number of victims is unclear. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, the paper reported.
An official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way told the Associated Press the gunman apparently had two guns. The school district remains on lockdown as police investigate the shootings. There are unconfirmed reports of two shooters, according to the paper.
LIVE: Updates from the shooting site
Some students were reportedly being treated for trauma. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher has been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital, but it's unclear if that's the only injury.
One child was carried from the school by a police officer, according to The Newtown Bee, apparently seriously wounded.
The school superintendent's office says the district has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.
State police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance says they have a number of personnel on the scene to assist.
The Courant reported that police said a shooter was in the main office of the school shortly after 9:40 a.m.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers, the Courant reported.
A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school.

The district is made up of four elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school.
Newtown is in northern Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.

CNN reporting that as many as 12 students may be dead. Reports are not yet official, however, so that's why many of the networks have yet to broadcast these numbers. Obviously do not want to send parents of the children in that school into utter panic if not true.

It's very unlikely that the gunman was a first grader. Although, I guess it's possible.

A more recent report is saying that the shooter may be a parent of one of the students.
The number of victims is unclear, but NBC News is reporting that at least 20 children at the school were shot. The local ABC affiliate reported that at least 12 people are dead including the gunman who is believed to be a parent of one of the students. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, the Courant reported.

Some of you would be amazed by the crazy crazy parents that come into the schools....especially elementary. You really have to be there to get the idea. It's a lot of "where the hell did they come from?"

They are saying the shooter was approximately 20 years old ... I don't care how crazy you are, it takes pure EVIL to kill a kid. Just sickened by this, especially after recently becoming a father myself. Unreal.

Amazing. Shocking and very sad. Wasn't there a bad shooting several years ago, Amish school maybe?

Sadly it might be time for gangland-style countermeasures at all schools, not just high crime ones.

I imagine this is going to seriously rattle all parents. If your kids aren't safe at ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, what do you do?

No, just very sick and unstable people. Truly crazy people have had their moral compass destroyed and lost any sense of rational thought.

The very sad reality is it may be time to implement gangland-style countermeasures in ALL schools, even elementary apparently. Of course then somewhere down the road you'll just have a crazy teacher snapping.

NEWTOWN, Conn. — At least 27 people were killed, including an unconfirmed number of children, in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., on Friday, according to reports from Reuters and The Associated Press. If confirmed, it would be one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history. It comes after a series of shooting rampages in the United States this year that have killed multiple victims.
The suspected shooter, the father of a student there, was also killed, CBS News reported. The principal and school psychologist were among the dead, CNN said.
