Oh god not the Illini. OSU never ever plays good against them or Purdue. Yet usually always takes it to MSU or Minnesota no matter how good they are

Minnesota is never good, so I don't know what you're talking about.

Remember last winter when Meyer labeled the line “non-functional?” Not anymore. The same unit that yielded 46 sacks last season — the most by a Big Ten team in four seasons — and lost three starters who signed with NFL teams is now a cornerstone strength.
Anchored by left tackle and St. John’s Jesuit graduate Jack Mewhort, the crew of four juniors and a senior has kept quarterback Braxton Miller safer in the pocket and cleared room for one of the country’s top rushing offenses. The Buckeyes’ 248 ground yards per game is fourth-most among BCS schools.
“That’s the whole reason why we are where we are today,” Meyer said recently of the line, which has allowed just 18 sacks through nine games. “Tell it the way it is. Our offensive line is coming on.”

It's amazing what having a real O-line coach can do. The players we have had at OSU have always had the ability/talent/athleticism. We just had the worst offensive line coach in the history of football.

It's really quite amazing how bad our offensive line was for so long and yet Bollman stuck around.

Is the O-line better, or is the competition worse? (I'm asking. I'm not an O-line expert)

2011
Akron 1-11 0 sacks
Toledo 9-4 0 sacks
Miami 6-6 2 sacks
Colorado 3-10 3 sacks
Michigan St 11-3 9 sacks (they averaged 3.2/game last year)
Nebraska 9-4 1 sack (they averaged 1.6/game last year)
Illinois 7-6 4 sacks (they averaged 3.15/game last year)
Wisconsin 11-3 3 sacks (they averaged 1.8/game last year)
Indiana 1-11 6 sacks (they averaged 1.5/game last year)
Purdue 7-6 5 sacks (they averaged 1.7/game last year)
Penn St 9-4 3 sacks (they averaged 2.4/game last year)
Michigan 11-2 4 sacks (they averaged 2.3/game last year)
Florida 7-6 6 sacks
92-76 54%

2012
Miami 4-4 4 sacks
UCF 6-2 1 sack
Cal 3-6 0 sacks
UAB 1-7 2 sacks
Michigan St 5-4 1 sack (they average 1.2/game)
Nebraska 6-2 2 sacks (they average 3/game)
Indiana 3-5 2 sacks (they average 2.5/game)
Purdue 3-5 0 sacks (they average 1.625/game)
Penn St 5-3 4 sacks (they average 2.875/game)
36-38 48%

I also looked at out run/pass attempts per game.

in 2011 we ran 43 times/game and attempted 18.8 passes/game
in 2012 we are running 45.4 times/game and attempting 24.4 passes/game

So we are giving up less sacks with more pass attempts.

Mason was a good coach. I can't believe you're still hung up a game that happened 12 years ago. :) I mean, I get the upsets of good teams (MSU 98 comes to mind) but 2000 was a very meaty okre year for the bucks.

wtf you talking about, "hung up"? I was just referencing the fact that Minny hasn't always been terrible, and that they've had some successful seasons. Relax

Minnesota made a mistake getting rid of Mason. They may not have won big games with him, but at least he got NFL talent on the team.

I always wonder what would have happened if Mason got the OSU coaching job instead of Tressel (I believe he was in the final 2 if I remember correctly). Funny thinking back at that time, there were all these rumors of Jon Gruden being on a flight to Columbus to accept the job, and Bob Stoops leaving Oklahoma to coach the Buckeyes.

Isn't Gruden somehow involved in rumors for every open college coaching job? Kind of funny, really.

He was in the final 2. I was dissapointed (not for long) when they chose Tressel.

Fix'd. He's the guy everyone seems to want or at least hypothesize could be coming there. Meanwhile, he just sits in the commentator's booth letting everyone know that the two QBs on the field at any given time are the two greatest players in the history of the game.
