They have 3 wins against one of the toughest conferences in the country. We can sit here and debate if they would win those games more than 1 times out of 10, but the proof is in the pudding.

It was tough between 9 or 10. They certainly aren't a top 5 team, that's for sure.

Toby, IMO, a 7-0 ND team (with their schedule) deserves a top 5 ranking just as much as the others mentioned.

Already lowering expectations? Good strategy.

Rankings can go 2 ways. How good you THINK the teams are or how good their RESULTS say they are.

Based on the latter, Notre Dame is in the top 5 for sure. If it's just a subjective ranking then that's a different story. In a general sense, rankings are based on results, not opinion.

No doubt about that. I ranked them based on how good I thought they were. Notre Dame deserves #4-5 based on results, but there are a 10-15 team overall.

My expectations have not changed one bit from August. This team isn't all that great. This is all an intro for 2013, if they don't go to the NFL.

That's what I was thinking all year too but honestly it could be this year. The defense is lights out. If they beat Oklahoma ill be full on with the hype for a national title. I don't see nd winning against Oklahoma but ya never know

You do realize Ohio State is going to be bowl eligible in 2013 right? Good luck.

What he's saying is notre dame should be a top 3 team next year. Both are going to be very good. Probably both top 3-5

Teo will go pro. Once he's gone, the defense is trash. This is ND's year and they won't win anything.

Losing te'o will hurt big time but the defense will still be top 5. The d line is all young except klm. And the offense should be 10 times better next year. And the schedule has a lot of big name teams but all of them will have first year starting qbs. I would honestly be very disappointed if they don't go 11-1 or 12-0 next year

No this is not "ND's year." This is all rebuilding for 2013/2014 and onward, essentially completing the reset button after Weis. Yes, programs like ND need to reset and not reload unlike Ohio State. Spare me your pointing that out. But I could list dozens of examples pointing to that trend.

The 2013 schedule is very manageable. Every team on the schedule will be "down," except maybe Oklahoma. My opinion on the chance of victory a year out is in parenthesis.

vs Temple (99%)
at Michigan (80%)
at Purdue (90%)
vs Michigan State (85%)
vs Oklahoma (55%)
vs* Arizona State (65%)
BYE
vs Southern Cal (55%)
at Air Force (99%)
vs Navy (99%)
at Pittsburgh (90%)
BYE
vs BYU (65%)
at Stanford (60%)

The biggest issue is who comes back for the team. Tyler Eifert is 99.99% gone. But what about Cierre Wood and Louis Nix? Both are among the best at their positions.

If everyone comes back they will be favored in 12/12 games.

This wouldn't be the first time a team won it all a year ahead of schedule. Ohio State's 2002 squad did just that.

If Kelly doesn't win a BCS game this year or next, is he gone?

Kelly's job is safe. Swarbrick isn't an idiot. Kelly has improved the team and program in numerous ways, people who pay attention see it everywhere. It was only a matter of time before that turned into wins. No one with a brain puts weight on BCS victories it's about the winning percentage. Here are the great ones for ND (there winning percentage at Notre Dame only):

Knute Rockne: 88%
Frank Leahy: 86%
Ara Parseghian: 84%
Dan Devine: 76%
Lou Holtz: 77%

Now obviously Rockne and Leahy, and to some extent Parseghian, were from a different time when Notre Dame ran a dynasty more or less. Stack those up against the three coaches post-Holtz who killed the program for fifteen seasons:

Bob Davie: 58%
Ty Willingham: 58%
Charlie Weis: 57%

And the guy who cleaned it up:

Brian Kelly: 70%

Kelly's career winning percentage is 75%, and when he gets things running like he did in Cincinnati (where he had an 85% winning percentage), the number will get closer to 75-77% and that's all you can ask for. A 10-3 season is a 77% season. He will average that the next three seasons, I have no doubts there.

So, no. His job is more than likely safe. As long as no more camera boys die...

lol @ 99% win chance against Temple. Hell I think my grandma and her nursing home friends could net a 99% win chance against Temple.
