Well it is semi true, but the idea they are putting out there isn't correct. They are making it sound like Verizon has the fastest speed with LTE, but in all actuality, that isn't the case at all. They have LTE towers that are functioning, but the speed that they are functioning at isn't necessarily better than a 3G or a 4G. We have LTE towers too that we are not saying are lit yet, because technically they aren't up 100% of the time, because we often knock them off line to do additional testing, upgrading or repairs. So do we have them, yes, will we say we have them, no. Not until we quit playing with them. we are running our 4Gs, but our 4Gs are running faster than the "LTE". The biggest difference between us and Verizon, they built on the wrong technology, which means they will cap out in speed, we will not be capped. We have a stair step technology, they have a "fall of the cliff" technology. We are eliminating all of our 2Gs so the slowest networks out there would be a 3G technology, but there isn't a cap on how fast we can go. Sprint, well, they are a different ballgame all together. They don't have the money to invest into their spectrum which is why they will always fall far behind. They also built on the wrong technology so they will eventually have the same problems as Verizon, once they have the money to spend. You can run speed tests on your phone. You will see what people are truly getting with Verizon...

Your AT&T mobile rep is correct in some cases. And I did misspeak. On Sprint, the new iPhone will definitely be a 3G phone until LTE markets roll out. On AT&T, the phone will be able to access the HSPA+ network. But your AT&T mobile rep is still kind of giving you the sales person perspective (I don't blame her...Always Be Closing). She seems to be downplaying LTE speeds, which if I was a rep for AT&T in a market that didn't have LTE yet, I would be doing as well. And she also seems to exaggerate Verizon's limitations. While true that Verizon's phones will be LTE or 3G...and nothing in between...she makes this seem as though if you don't have LTE you are going to be screwed. You won't be. Yes, AT&T will still offer HSPA+ as a "3.5G" option if you fall out of an LTE market. But HSPA+ isn't much better than 3G, at least not in Cincinnati. And I don't know where she gets the idea that Verizon would cap out in speed while AT&T would not. That just doesn't make sense at all.

As an unbiased outsider, and someone who carries phones on all three major carriers, there is no comparison between the LTE speeds I get on my Verizon phone and the HSPA+ speeds I get on my AT&T phone. I have used the LTE speeds on AT&T during some time I was up in Cleveland. And they were impressive, and would be a very viable solution IF they were available in Cincinnati. But they aren't. It would be my recommendation to take a Verizon LTE device over an AT&T HSPA+ phone assuming all specs on the device are equal (which they will be in this case).

By comparison, my AT&T phone usually averages 3-5 MB/s down and 1-2 Mb/s up.

Also...this third party company just did some testing in the Cincinnati market back in June. They pretty much echo the sentiments on LTE vs. HSPA+ and 3G.

Yeah, I can live with those speeds for two years. We're switching to Verizon.

T-Mobile's 4G is HSPA+ as well. I would classify it more as 3.5G.

The problem is there was no set of criteria to determine that a network was 4G. All a carrier had to have to classify their network as 4G was a "significant improvement over 3G speeds." That's why Sprint was able to claim Wi-Max, and T-Mobile and AT&T were able to claim HSPA+ as "4G" networks. They are definitely faster than 3G...but they are not even close to LTE speeds.

Verizon lists there 4g lte as 5-12mb/second. I have had as much as 20 MB/a download.

We just got 4G Verizon service about 1 year ago. I fired up my 4G LTE Mifi and connected my phone to it. I got 1.3 mb down and 3.3 mb up.

Cdma is 3g, lte is 4g. Cdma is not getting much faster, but its not the future either. Lte its the future and will only get faster

I'll have to ask her. Because she specifically says it regards to the 4G. You can see it in her response above. She says Verizon built on the wrong technology.

I'll be getting the iphone at some point before the end of the year. If nothing else, it will do wonders for me for work. I teach for an online academy, and all of our software is Mac. So, when I go out of town, I can still connect with my students via the school's iphone app.
