Use both. They each have their strengths.

I prefer PCs, because I like control. The ability to easily edit the registry, plus the selection of Windows-capable applications makes options more varied.

However, the Mac and its compatible software is phenomenal for my digital media display creation.

The "PC" (laptop) I bought was about the same cost as most Macs, and the performance is (in my opinion) better for the same cost.

The problem with this discussion is that people are trying to compare a $1,200 Mac with a $400-600 Dell or HP. Of course the Mac is going to be better. That kind of Mac was built to be better.

When you compare two that are built for about the same cost, you're going to get CLOSE to the same result.

I think its marginally hilarious that you want to compare to similar priced Macs vs. PCs and say they aren't too different. I just gave you a perfect example of a MAC and a PC that were relatively the same spec-wise and you dismiss it because the Dell isn't a high end PC.

Neither are MACs. It's pure marketing that is pumped into your subconscious and its clearly working since you are now a delusional backer of the product. How does defeat taste? I've heard its fairly salty, but I wouldn't know, so tell me.

And Dell actually makes pretty good PCs at the higher end of the market. And servers.

I had pretty good luck with 2 or 3 Dell laptops. The issue with them is primarily customer service (the worst!). If you have a warranty you're basically screwed (especially as a home user), but ordering and getting timely delivery can be a bitch, too. And they really aren't cheaper anymore than comparative pc's with better quality and service records.

As to the thread topic, you can definitely find comparative pc's priced @ the Macs (although $100 on $2k is still fairly significant, but perhaps justifiable for other reasons). But if you shop around a bit much better deals aren't that tough to find.

I still have an HP from July of 2007 that does fine, and that I use on occasion. It was a well-made computer, and I actually took care of it and used some sense when surfing the Interwebz.

As far as the "virus" issue is concerned, it's virtually negligible if you take care of it like you would anything else you own.

I can probably count on 1 hand the number of viruses I've had the past 10 years. There's pretty good free protection out there. I think people getting viruses must be going to a lot of really shady sites and probably downloading a bunch of music and torrents (illegally).

It's true. Most people I've seen have issues either had warnings they ignored or downloaded something they know they shouldn't have. Contrary to popular belief, something can't just install and run itself on people's computers. It has to be catalyzed by the computer user.

I know you know that, but it just shocks me how people can think that they went to a website and it put malware on their computer without their knowledge.

I was going to say this, basically.

The product, as a whole, isn't made to last forever. New computers will come out every year. Each company will "upgrade" every year. I am not about to pay $1,200 for a product that just will be "upgraded" in a year or two. Computers will crap out eventually, as well. I know they are basically "throw away" materials. Yes, you can continue to fix different parts and such, but computers won't last forever.

I will buy 3-5 PCs before I'd spend the money to buy a Mac. It's money better spent, in my opinion.

Most computer viruses (recently) take advantage of out-of-date Adobe Reader/Flash plugins. A user has to browse to a site with a malicious advert and they're instantly boned. The site in question does NOT have to be a shady site. Facebook has been the victim of malicious ads before.

If you get that little Adobe prompt when you turn your computer on, there's a reason it wants updated: They've patched an exploit virus programmers are using.

Damn. Good call. I'd heard of that years ago, but I thought that had been all patched up by now.

Agreed. You can get a damn-near bank-cracking PC for that price. I knew a guy who built one for about $2K that had a 64-core HD (well, 8 double-quads) and substantially more RAM than those. It was beyond what anyone would need for anything ethical for a long, long time.

However, I'm pretty sure he built the whole thing to run a brute forcer, so it technically makes sense.
