Pretty much this. I sometimes say things to stir the pot a bit but it's usually to illustrate a point and not to literally call someone/group Nazis. Rarely are you doing well in a debate or discussion if you call the opposing side Nazis.Heretic;1200047 wrote:Yeah, I don't know that it's JJ-level modding when people are attempting to at least be philosophical and cool while discussing what easily can become a bitchfest issue and someone starts making wildly exaggerated comments just to stir the pot and turn things into that bitchfest. I'm not religious and don't particularly care for it, but comparing it (with the exception of particular sects/groups/cults) to Nazis is basically like saying "Fuck having rational talk, LET'S FIGHT!!!"

Unless they actually are Nazis. In which case, you're just reiterating a point.I Wear Pants;1200058 wrote:Pretty much this. It's actually a logical fallacy to do so. It's called argumentum ad Hitlerum, which can be explained in this:
1. You believe/are 'A'.
2. Widely accepted bad group believes/is 'A'.
3. Widely accepted bad group is bad.
4. Therefore, you are bad.
It is named what it is because the most common use in modernity seems to be Hitler or Naziism (for more on it, there is a Wikipedia page on it).
The idea is to find commonality between a group or though and a negatively-viewed other group or thought, but with the commonality not being the "bad" part of the latter group.
In sleeper's example, the commonality was that of "being an opinion," which is not the cause of the negative stigma associated with the Nazis.

I didn't say I'd ban for it. I just said that is illogical, as it is a common fallacy.Devils Advocate;1200100 wrote:^^^^
